It's been stated many times, Jet -- but for the sake of you and other new folks that haven't heard the story, here's what we're talking about when we refer to "the bend in the road":
To get onto the Salt there is one and only one access point. Get off I-80 at exit 4 - which is also marked as "Bnneville Speedway". Head northwest so you pass by the truck stop with the best Mexican restaurant (Salt Flats Cafe) in the area. The road you're on is straight for about a mile, then turns 90 degrees right and continues straight for four miles or so - and then ends. The end of the road is known as "Land's End -- and that's where Land's End Lynda hangs out during events.
Okay -- a few lines ago I mentioned the road takes a 90 degree turn, right? That is the only place on the access road - from the interstate to Lynda's place - that the road is anything but dead straight, and therefore we all call it "the bend in the road". It's not only a geographical point, but also has access to the flat land surrounding it -- and many, many, MANY people cap there. It's free -- B(ureau) of L(and) M(anagement) land -- open to the public. Absolutely no frills - although SCTA/BNI does station a few porta-potties and a garbage rolloff there. Otherwise - if you're staying there you can go the mile or so back to the truck stop for potty and shower and food.
The bend in the road is also the location for Salt Talks, the annual picnic that Nancy and I host on the Sunday evening of Speedweek. It'll be the 15th of August this year. Hamburgers, hot dogs, pasties, cold pop, chips and condiments are supplied. We sell Salt Talks t-shirts, too. It's free -- and there's a donation can or two to help defray the cost of the gathering and to support us keeping this website going (we own landracing.com). We usually have a 50/50 drawing. There usually is a crowd in the hundreds -- like 300 or more -- racers, crew, famous people Glen Barrett is always there, for instance), and it's the biggest social gathering of us during the whole danged year. If you're at Speedweek --plan to go to Salt Talks and learn just what is a pasty. Hint -- they're for eating, not modesty.
