I tried posting to respond to JD Tone yesterday -- but the 2 feet of snow we've received in the past day or two must have been the reason I couldn't get my response out. Freud's right about why two threads. As for taking up too much room on the site/server -- I guess I'd know it if that had happened, or was close to happening. Nothing from Dan P. on that yet, no increased monthly prices because we're taking up so much room.I commented on the 2 thread thing a while back. I fully understand why and suggested making both threads a "sticky" and locking the original thead but still have access to read. Never understood why that can't be done.
There is a way to post multiple photos on a single post on the Forum - and it doesn't take up mush space. I do it all the time at a race event, by storing the photos at Photobucket and just putting an automatic link to that site on the Forum post. But since there's already a site for the streamliner -- there's no big need to ask Freud or Ray to do extra duty to put the photos on landracing.com.
Thanks for looking at the Forum, everyone. I'm going to go shovel snow for a while. . .
Oh, Ray, forgive me -- but the comma cop in me has spotted a common error in your post -- and it must be addressed and corrected by me.Jeez Jon, you are as bad as my wife.
Daylight Saving Time is to do just that -- SAVE daylight. It's properly daylight SAVING(NO "S" HERE) time. No plural on the word saving, okay? Many, if not most, of the broadcast announcers make the error, but with them I simply chalk it up to ignorance. In your case I'll allow you to explain it away by letting you remind us where you live.
Best regards from your CC.

It's so great to see projects like this. I wish more schools would offer these types of projects. When I was in school I took every shop course available and don't regret it today. More power to these kids, they will do well in the real world.
I guess us old guys were lucky to have the advantage in school to have these classes. Things were still built in the USA and as kids that had that chance to develop the modern things that are farmed out all over the world today. We as a nation need to bring it back to this country.
Keep those kids involved, I am proud of what you are doing.
Merry Christmas.

I talked to Marlo and was filled in with the details about slurry.
The main ingredient is Diatomaceous Earth. It is mixed with Jet A fuel and applied with the brush.
A substitute for Diatomaceous Earth is finely ground chalk board chalk. It's easier to buy Diatomaceous Earth.
In several instances just a specific area of the models was tested.
The 100 HP electric motor moves the air enough that the temp of the air raises 10F per minute. One result is that the JetA
evaporates more rapidly. The second is that the calculations must be adjusted as the air temp rises.
Diatomaceous Earth can be bought in large quantities if you want to paint your car and see the air flow characteristics as you
drive down the road. It's available in pallet size quantities.
Call Stan Back for pricing.

Not true! It only needs to be 5' x 5'.
And 60' tall.
While the car is being sprayed we may as well have the trailer done at the same time.
Not much consideration regarding paint until a sponsor is found. No need to paint it twice.
That's one reason for the way the metal is being prepped. It will have a brushed finish until it's painted.

Not surprising.
Infrared thermometers are calibrated against a white calibration target. Color and surface texture strongly affect the reading. Some can be re-calibrated against a reference target that is a different color value. If you want accuracy you need a contact thermocouple.

In post 100_003 it says new oil pans were necessary due to the engines being low in the chassis. Are these the same ones that were shown back in march? Just curious its a shame if they had to be rebuilt they looked perfect! We all know however that the new ones wont be any different.

Thanks Ray. I did a little knocking around in IE and used Panda IEXIF 2 and found the same information.

Remember film? Spending hours in the darkroom trying to correct a dodgy print? After you spent hours processing the film in the first place? The cost of taking this many photos on film would be staggering.

It seems to me that the combination drain/vent line is a problem waiting to happen. With the opening of the line submerged in lube, any expansion of the air inside the unit due to heat, or even atmospheric pressure changes, will force lube up the tube and out. The vent really should be well above the lube level, and separate from the drain.
Looking good! You can never have too many Clecos....

I was herding cats all weekend with our team. It sucks to be crewchief and used to being EARLY for everything. Throw an artist into the crew and I might as well had a Mime!?!?!?!??!
Good stuff, thanks guys!
What engine(s) + trans combo will it run?
That sounds like a ton of hassles to me. I'd be more afraid of flinging belts than electrons, but electrons on the salt are my specialty. Just don't spill'em!
I seriously can't wait to see this car run, but I hope the builders (and fanboys, there seem to be a lot of 'em) are prepared for 4-5 years of debugging work.
How much horpsepower will it take to go 550mph in this? (seems a lofty target!) I know that the Spectre car needed around 2000hp for it's number just over 400mph.
One other question, does the Treit streamliner have a suspension, or is it rigid?
You forget one thing Grasshopper..................Marlo and Les spent years already refining their program with their lakester. They know what they are doing.

No but the worked out their engine program, their blower issues and many of the logistics of going big speeds.
Re: 15,000 horsepower, I know for a fact if you show up with that much power the only thing that will happen is broken parts and slipping tires.... I sense a lot of fanboyism and unrealistic expectations. I may not have been coming to the salt for the last 300 years like some of you, but I know for sure they better show up with the right amount of power - not too much, not too little.
I can see value to the fact that they did a live load and unload test in the actual environment the car will be run in.
They got to set up the tent structure and do the trailer off load and on load several times. I know there were some lessons learned during that process because I remember a couple comments about needing to remember an issue to make appropriate changes.
That said Bonneville has always in my experience been a bit of a car show, some of the spectator cars are as spectacular as the race cars.
Many of us spend as much time checking out the spectator and pit support cars as we do the race cars.
Like many I was thankful that we got to see this piece in a relaxed environment where they were not in a thrash to get it on the course and running.
Not to mention that as I understand it the car was built to FIA standards for world records and will not run under SCTA rules.
Larry
Diesel, I am neither trying to rile you or provoke your responses, nor am I in anyway connected with this race car.
I have tried to follow the old axiom: there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.
Saying that, I feel (and apologize if mistaken) that you take great pride in being a "devils advocate" or possibly just want to see how far you can push before someone explodes.
Speeking as a fairly knowledgable non member of the car, I have tried to patiently answer your questions in a way that most anyone can understand (and you seem very inquisitive and knowledgable).
There are several mechanical engineers who frequent this site and are amazed at the amount of engineering, research and forthought that has been put into this car.
Marlo has worked with engineers from Gates Rubber who are confident their belts can take the stress.
Moreover, it would be fairly simple to convert the belt drive to chain or even gears if neccessary.
If you have legitimate questions, it is your right to ask them, but to downplay the display of a unfinished masterpiece that was viewed with relish by probably 90% of those in attendance is degrading to not only the viewers of this site but to you your self.
I am certainly no expert, but I am at a loss as to what you hope to gain with your insistant negativism in regards to this project.
Perhaps propeller's are more to your liking. Bob Drury (360) 696-1428 any time day or night.
And thank you to tman, desotoman and hotrod for not feeling the need to break out the Franklin comparisons. I do agree, a load / unload test is a good idea. So many of us have gotten out there to find out "we can't get this D*MN thing off or on the trailer" :-D
Although I have never set a record on the salt, I designed, built, and paid for every part of my car except the paint
Diesel, there are 1,466 posts on this topic, 370 on the original thread, and 186 pages of photos.
You would do well to take the time to read the posts and check out all of the pictures and then ask questions.
The answers are out there.
The plan now is to do the first tests at the Mojave Mile the last weekend in September. Marlo bought new 250 MPH tires,
had them mounted and shaved to use when they do the "destructive" type testing on that strip. Any problems will be
addressed over the winter.
The only thing missing from the testing sequence will be the smell of NITRO.

Trust me when I say Horsepower will be no problem. They will be able to produce as much that is needed to get the job done. Les Davenport is a genius when it comes to motors. He also currently runs a car at the Nostalgia Drags in A/F that has beat Kin Bates whose tuner is Dean Adams, son of Gene Adams.

Some articles identified him as Marlowe, some as Marlo.
Personally I know him as a friend, mentor and one funny S.O.B. (although his Canadian Humor can wear on one).
Just remember that in the LSR racing community that when you say Marlo (spelled any way you prefer) you know that whom ever is speaking is talking about one of the true inovators in our sport's history, and that no matter how many records he HAS OR HAS NOT set, He will go down with folk's like Chauvin, Ernie Immerso and many others who while trying to set records, most importantly spent most of their career's on the Salt trying to conquer different techknowlegies and idea's rather than the status quo of outdoing the norm.

Congratulations Geek, you have managed to monopolize 5 pages of a thread dedicated to the build of the Treits Streamliner with your attention seeking, narcissistic bleating.
Can we get this thread back on topic please?
Topic being the celebration and enjoyment of the Treit-Davenport build.
Tman, I respect both your posts and opinion and just to update you, Diesel and I have been engaged in a off line discussion initiated by him that hopefully has not only ended our on site tug of war but hopefully started a meaningful off-site friendship.

Ray, I don't know you except from this forum. I live in Farmington and would happy to assist you to get your car ready if needed. I am a jack of all trades (master of none). Let me know if you need an extra hand. Back to the subject at hand. I was at Speed week and got to see Treit's car up close. Being an old aircraft sheet metal mechanic I have to say I have a man crush on the liner. It wouldn't matter if it ever ran or set a record, the workmanship is just beautiful. I know the immense amount of thought/planning and layout that has gone into this. It harrd for me to even fathom the amount of work and unwavering commitment it has taken to get to this point. I salute Marlow and his entire group, I hope to be like them when I grow up. I don't think I can swing Mojave but I want/need to see Treit's car run as soon as I can. Lastly, "can't we all just get along ".

Update 188: http://www.target550.com/gallery/188_car&carrier_back_at_humes/index.html (http://www.target550.com/gallery/188_car&carrier_back_at_humes/index.html)
It's on the server. It shows the liner returning to the womb, so to speak. It's back at Hume's shop for more attention. There are quite a few shots of the car carrier showing that it's probably better suited for carrying the liner on the salt flats than in Hume's driveway. The little issue with the speed brake has been addressed and there are some photos of the parachute release mechanisms.
I'm doin a thrash on my race car, so I busted my hump and got the post done quickly so I could get back to work.
Here are a couple of extra images that were done while the liner was at Speed Week to go along with the post.
The plan now is to do the first tests at the Mojave Mile the last weekend in September. Marlo bought new 250 MPH tires,The Mojave Mile is September 29-30. Ok, so the stated plan is to drive 2,000 miles to do some low speed testing. Not a bad plan.
had them mounted and shaved to use when they do the "destructive" type testing on that strip. Any problems will be
addressed over the winter.
The only thing missing from the testing sequence will be the smell of NITRO.

Speaking of machining bubble gum you haven't lived until you have machined 1000 aluminum. Not 1050 or 1100, but chemically pure aluminum. It was used as a target in vapor deposition. I think machining bubble gum may have been easier. How about "Hastelloy" we called it stainless steel lead (combined the worst machining characteristics of both)
Interesting. The last one I was around was much more modern (and smaller). All the power ran thru a Ford Model A transmission which gave the operator 3 speeds and neutral.

Is there an interlock to prevent the canopy from opening at speed?
I picture reaching for the chutes or fire bottles in an emergency and opening the canopy.
I know you guys have a shot of teh top of the canopy and the NACA duct, anyone have it handy to post?

Just a slight correction. The url Freud posted is correct. But I added a separate section in the Menu bar for Unsung Heroes; it's not in the News section.
Bill, I showed my sister and cousin (whom I haven't seen in decades and she visited me on Saturday) the photos I shot of Rizzy giving Mitch a coin just before the "rains came down" at SW 2011. They were both teary-eyed with emotion. Keep up the good work, bro.
In the two pictures above ( not the group photo) I love that you can see the flush mount rivets filed smooth. Does anyone have a clue as to how many rivets there are in this car?
Wow... that NACA Duct is incredible ( As is the whole car.)! I'm tempted to try my hand with Aluminum, but can't really justify bunging up a perfectly good piece of metal just for practice. One of these days I'll transform all these empty "Steel Reserve" cans into something. That is as soon as the headach wears off.
Is it better late than never?

Rex, you are correct in many instances. Danny is dedicated and he slave drives himself.
Those two people respect each other. It was a no holds bared chat. Both asked questions
and both gave immediate answers. They never held back. Marlo left there with an amazing
amount of respect for Danny and he also knows what a monumental task he has ahead of him.
We appreciate Danny's invitation to come visit him. I believe that his shop will be a mandatory

The honey-do list is now 12 pages in a Word document.
I made certain that her PC documents can not be opened with my Mac.
I thought my new noise canceling head fones would help solve the shouting problem

Just a little teaser: You probably won't be seeing the blue car for the foreseaable future. We may decide to show/run the other car. LOL!
I think that big Dodge Ram logo on the front there is a clue perhaps? We will learn more in just over a week...
I guess Marlo(we) always liked two engines . . .
That's a great looking car; it resembles the JCB streamliner in many ways. One thing-- to me, the windshield angle seems to an abrupt change from the horizontal body. Would a fairing help direct the airflow over the surface?
Nice photos, Ray.

I just checked in on the Target 550 site. That cover shot is very impressive. Perfect back drop.
Ryan Davenport has made a video of the parachute deployment on the Target550 test at the USFRA Test & Tune. That video is the second run with the engine failure and the lost body panel. Maximum speed per the Racepak GPS on that run was 224.61 mph. The first run had a maximum GPS speed of 272.71 mph - the video for that run can be seen on YouTube here:

Marlo and the crew went to Calgary, Canada and did some dyno runs.
Les Davenport has modified the Whipple blowers and that was one
of the main tests. Horsepower readings were not the main interest.
Their concern was that the timing of the rotors did not change.
It was a short testing session when one considers the distance.
So the drill now is to be ready to leave for Wendover in a few days
and continue their test program.
Be ready for Les to get his foot in it early in the session.

They are having some wider tooth Q.C. gears built and are running on pins and needles until them. They also didn't realize that they had hurt one of the B&J transmissions when the Q.C.s let go at the test and tune. Also they were trying out LED shift lights because He can't read the tach or normal 12v lights on a rough course.
Their drivetrain is so radical that its going to take a while to sort it out.
Unless the get to run it a couple more times before November, I doubt they will go to Australia in December but that's just my opinion .
Also keep in mind that by underdriving the superchargers they can probably dump 50% nitro in it at any time and pickup another 1,000 h.p.
Freud, let me "consult" with you on recording the sound. I spent some time at the National Center for Audio Experimentation and learned tons of stuff - some of which could enhance the sound of passing race vehicles about a zillion fold. It's surprisingly easy -- it's called binaural sound.
It's cool stuff.

We need 11 million tons of salt to build up the salt crust by just 1 inch on the flats - so don't hold your breath waiting for "good salt" with current annual pumping levels of 600,000 tons plus continuing salt withdrawals due to the mining.

Quotethey are long and not large in diameter therefore pretty flexible which attenuates (reduces) shock loads
Long, springy driveline elements also could give rise to torsional oscillations and resonances in the driveline which may well overcome the tendency to attenuate. May not have shock loading but large load variation nonetheless. Might also have some lateral stability concerns.
This drive seems to be more cut-and-try as opposed to being thoroughly engineered. (Shaft sizes dictated by the bearings?)
So what would be the work around? Fire chutes in an upward and outward manner? On the Herbert-Steen liner we put two rows of vortex generators on each side to help pull the air around the tail & went to a bigger pilot to catch more air with a stronger spring to launch it further with a longer bridal line. It worked for that but doesn't mean it will work for this.
Create dirty air when chutes deploy? Like a flap or air brake?

I believe they want to check drivetrain reliability before the expense of shipping to a different continent and finding the failure there.I certainly understand the need for this. My comment was directed at the likelihood that the track will be unavailable for even modest testing. Is WF cancelled yet?

Marlo's concern is the length of good salt for slowing and stopping.
Marlo's luck is worse than bad! He just can't get a break. I know that he thinks the salt in Australia is the best place to really run for a big number but with all of the money he is throwing at this I wonder if he would reconsider South America? Lots of altitude but I am sure he has the ability to turn the blowers faster and the salt there is endless. I Know that we all support his effort but I would sure like to see him be someplace that they can "stand on it" 5 or 6 miles.
