motorcycle race tires
« on: July 09, 2011, 07:06:06 AM »
I need to buy new motorcycle "race" tires for Bonneville, 200 + mph.  Should I look at road racing slicks or treaded race tires?  Are tire warmers necessary for slicks?

I did contact Van Butler asking for specific tires that qualify and he answered right away saying: "Any racing tire, road racing tires (slicks).  I believe the Bridgestone 003 are race tires with tread and also the Dunlop GP211 are also race tires with tread."

There is a very long thread here on this subject. Do search or wait for 4 barrel Mike to post it. Dean of LA is a good thread finder also.

The Bridgestone 003 seemed to do best, last year. If you are NA and use a little right hand traction control you will do fine. If you are turbo or nitrous a lot of right hand tc. The Dunlops didnt do to good.

From what I saw, I was checking tyres and stamping tyre stickers, the Dunlops available on the lake were a bit too soft
But I think, from what I saw, the Dunlop guy didn't bring any hard compound tyres
The Bridgestones I saw looked pretty good
There was one guy with Goodyear land speed tyres who ran all week without a problem
So
You shouldn't need tyre warmers
Whatever brand you use, go for a hard compound
And use a little bit of right hand traction control

Soft motorcycle tires want to blister, if you have a lot of power.
Tire heaters won't help traction on Salt, IMHO.
I guess the answer is "a Secret" .
