What's going on with Save The Salt?
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:01:18 AM »
I just got my SDRC news letter and am concerned about the update on STS. The first sentence says Save the Salt has taken a giant step backward, it makes mention of the work done by "new" volunteers setting up "global awareness" and rounding up a coalition of interested motorsports players. Then I read The Save The Salt Board has done little or nothing over the years, besides selling T-shirts. I've seen the salt flat recede and heard of the problems with monitoring the brine pumping.
The "new" blood is credited with having worked to make the recent governmental changes in oversight happen, including significantly increasing the amount of brine being pumped. The "old" board is accused of a "power play" made to slow down the changes? One of the "new" guys that has worked very hard getting the ball moving again, has now resigned, in what appears to be frustration, due to the inaction of the "old board".
As a contributer to Save The Salt, a racer, and a lover of Bonneville, I would like to fully understand what's really going on with the effort to preserve and improve the Bonneville salt flats. Anyone want to step up and let us know what is going on and what the plan is going forward. We all want to preserve the Bonneville Salt Flats that's why Save The Salt exists, right?

Has anybody contacted the listed person in the rulebook? I doubt you will get an answer here. Who wrote the article in in SDRC newsletter? Maybe some bad blood here, who resigned the board?

Well peg, it seems your clubs news letter says a lot of different things. none of which is what I'm hearing at the SCTA board meetings when Russ gives his STS report. All the information given at the board meetings has been positive with the new lawyer contacting SEMA, Source Interlink, Intrepid Mining, & the BLM in D.C. etc. along with the dollars spent recently to do so.
I've not heard of anyone resigning, which doesn't mean it hasn't happened but I'm not clear on this. So I'll ask you to name names, post your clubs news letter or forward it to me.

John,

Be nice!

Craig,

For clarification, SDRC does not have a News Letter. What is published is the minutes from the monthly membership meeting which is a summary of discusions. I have to admit that I did not attend last Thursday's meeting so I will not try to comment on anything that was discussed.

Each month STS is talked about and is based on the STS report from the SCTA Board Meeting. Everything that I have heard lately has been very positive news. This is because of hard work by everyone involved. Much has been accomplished on the Legal front and it looks like we finally have the BLM's attention!

The job of Club Secretary is not an easy one, and I would not want to do it. There is always a lot of talking going on, and boiling down an hour long meeting into a page or 2 is tough to do. It is very easy to get things out of context.

Now I'm sorry I missed the meeting. Hang in there folks!

Tom

Being a non-resident member of the SDRC, I depend on the news letter for my club info.
I am not trying to be critical here but I have noticed quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor and sarcasm over the last year or too in the info printed.
I would hope that it is all meant in good humor, and if it isn't, someone else needs to assume that job (which I am sure is a pain in the ACURA anyway).
I think those of us who frequent this site can recall several instances of others taking offense to, or missunderstanding what the poster intended as humorous.
Just as I made a Acura out of myself posting about Doug Herbert a year or so back, we can all take a lesson from the SDRC news letter:  DON'T PRINT IT OR SAY IT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, and KEEP YOUR PERSONAL OPINIONS OUT OF IT.

Ok, It's time for me to say some thing here. As the president of the SDRC, I was at the meeting, Like normal I ran
the meeting. Our meeting consists of a lot of humor and me rereading the SCTA and SDRC minutes, as see fit to abbreviate
them. The SDRC sends complete copies of both minutes out to all of our members.
There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes with all of the entities of our great association. If want to know why STS took a couple of leaps backwards ask Mike Waters, it was his play.
If the tongue and cheek humor of the SDRC minutes offends You, remember our club motto WMBCSBWE.

Thank You

I want to be clear, I am not unhappy with the SDRC or the fine job being done by the officers of the club. I have been the secretary of our local Meals on Wheels for the past 5 years, it is not a simple job taking the minutes and publishing them.
I was concerned that "just when things seemed to be going along so well"............ Save the Salt was going to implode in a leadership crisis, as this was the first I'd heard of the issue, I felt it should be discussed openly on this forum. I want to be sure Save the Salt does just what the name says. I thank everyone who works, or has worked toward this goal

STS has made nothing but leaps forward in the last couple of years. This is what pisses me off. a lot of people working their arse off to try and fix the problem, then a few people that don't know jack saying how they are doing it wrong. 40 years of fighting to save the salt and 4 minutes of hard thought reasoning of how they are doing it wrong. sounds like someone has a burr under thier saddle. why not contact STS and get the real story.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

Apparently the SDRC knows an awful lot about STS. Russ Eyres is a SDRC member and good point of conact for STS. Dyno room and I were both at the board meeting where the STS was discussed. What we heard on site does not seem to reflect the SDRC version. Who was it that resigned? I am guessing that info was in the minutes sent out by SDRC.

Save The Salt is a great cause and a great bunch of people, Don't get me wrong, WE ARE ALL in the same fight.
But when the powers at be put someone in charge of doing something. And they do it....with out reservation.
recruit help, get outside companies to donate time and resources(at NO charge) To make our presence explode into the automotive public eyes.Make things happen almost seamlessly on a daily account.
Then to Have certain STS board members get there nose's bent out of shape. Because they fell behind the times and can't even keep track of the own cause . Start accusing the donate help of Power plays to the
point of the art designer and website gentleman have both quit .
Even though they were just performing the tasks they were asked to do.
Dallas, your Father and Mine have been on the salt long than just about any I can thing of. You and I and our siblings were raised out on the salt.
I for one do not want it to go away, I want to bring My boys out there too!
There are going to have to be some changes/ adjustments in communications within the STS.
With the on slot of electronic age things happen very quickly, Lawyers on the east coast, boards members
stretched all over the western states, and with NOW the Collation , companies and Private sponsors are STEPPING up .
Guys this a boils down to GROWING PAINS They will get it figured out .
And Yes Dan Apparently the SDRC does know an awful lot about STS, amazing what matching Last names
might have to do with that.
With that I'm going to go pay my respects to a great association /SDRC member Fritz Kott and lay him to rest
tomorrow. Then pack up for El Mirage and get back to Racing!
