Joaquin Arnett

Bad news,

This was just reported by ANDY  BEKECH    ( Prowlers Club Historian).

"It's with a sad heart to mention, that Joaquin Arnett passed away Sept. 24th. He will be remembered for his early contributions & records to the racing hobby! His innovations (ahead of their time), put this man ahead of most, not only on drag racing, but at the lakes, Bonneville & the cars & engines he built. One of the founding members of the Bean Bandits car club in San Diego & his never ending race stories kept everyone laughing! Nothing but smiles & good times will be remembered!"

Joaquin was a legend in the formative years of Drag Racing. I had the great privilige of being sponsored into the San Diego Roadster Club by Joaquin. Unfortunately I was at the finish line at El Mirage that fateful day when his son Sonny crashed and was killed. Joaquin was never quite the same. Joaquin and Sonny are together again!

Sorry for the sad news. Many knew him a lot better than I did, but he will be missed by all!

I didn't realize this info had already been posted on the SCTA Website, but you may have missed it in the Health & Welfare section.

Setting aside his Landracing exploits, he was a genuine drag racing pioneer.

Would've loved to have the yellow paint concession in the San Diego area in the day.

The series of interviews in Bonneville Racing News on Joaquin are priceless.

But then aren't all their interviews at that level?

RIP

I went to Bakersfield for the 10Th Reunion "Cacklefest", and was walking around that car and Joaquin came up to me and started talking like we had been buddies for 20 years. He was really eager to explain that the Stromberg 97's on the car were only throttle bodies. He had designed a mechanicle fuel injection system using a barrel valve and nozzles in the carb bases. All crude and homemade. The great thing he said it was simple and it worked. Never got a chance to talk again. Too bad, great guy to talk to and I was glad to see he was still involved after all of the years of reading about "The Bean Bandits". He will be greatly missed.

I could listen to his stories for hours. Joaquin will be sorely missed by all that knew him but his accomplishments and innovations will live forever. Another name for the twilight memorial at this years hot rod reunion
