Me thinks it is a NON-issue.  This is for commercial vehicles.  That means it applies to you ONLY if you are using your trailer or your truck to produce income with it or with what is inside it.

Last time I checked "income" means money coming in to me.  Upon further investigation, and perusal of my highly detailed records for the last dozen or so Bonneville meets I've attended, I can find no evidence of anything other than "outgo".  So I would guess that at the very least, and if one were to use a VERY strict interpretation of this new reg, that Nevada owes me money every time I tow through there, right?

Right?......  RIGHT?......

Hello.... is anybody listening?

Oh never mind.

Before you could drive into Nevada to get your commercial permit.  Now you must have it beforehand.

Non issue. Penski racing would need to get a trip permit. Or any other professional racing team. Rich Fox and Honda Jim will not need a permit nor any other Hobby racer.

I don't see the problem for LSR folks, as we don't get prize money. See FAq #10. It would affect short track racers who get "paid", even though 99% never make a profit. That always griped me here in Indiana.  Be aware though, there may be several states like Indiana that are telling us we have to have a DOT number (free) and carry a copy of our DOT physical, even on vehicles that do not require a CDL, but are over 10K.

So I guess that means Leslie can't park her truck in the casino parking lot without getting a permit....  :|

How about the Bub meet.... I bet everyone should take their rig to the scales and get an empty weight if they are close...

Just one more thing...  :-P

A friend here in Nebraska got fined in Colorado a few years back while transporting his personal car to a show. His truck had lettering on the side and commercial plates. According to the trooper, that made him a commercial vehicle, regardless of what his use or purpose was. Every time he went to or through Colorado, he had to buy a permit (think REVENUE).

If Nevada is using this for revenue, they could be very severe on enforcement.

If you haven't been going through the scales already, you're good.

If you have business ads on the tow vehicle with a phone number, you could be at risk, remove them if they are magnetic.  While you can tow for pleasure using a work truck, you might get stopped and have to explain.  If it's just a pickup with no business markings, the odds are very slim you'll ever have an issue.  Kinda like getting your tank dipped for off-road diesel.  Sure it can happen, it's just very rare.

Guys with medium-duty and larger tows are usually the target.  Put a phone number on them, and you'll eventually get stopped.  Put a NOT FOR HIRE - PRIVATE USE ONLY sticker on.  If you've got 5 horses, cattle, or 3 cars in the trailer, you'll probably have to explain it in court.  And you'll probably lose.

Good on ya, Rat.  I've often wondered why someone would have to tell the world that their rig was "not for hire".  Like do they get tired of people running up to them and saying, "Please, oh please, let me hire your truck," or what?  Now I know.

I think.

I'll be towing on an open trailer with a very small rig so I probably won't have a problem.  Just in case I'll put a sign on the  racecar the says "Driver has no cash."  It's good to be honest and that statement will always be 100% true.

Lots of states already have these rules, CA has had it for years. Before you enter the state you must purchase a trailer tag or at the first port of entry you may purchase one.

You can get legal opinions from everyone from the dishwasher to the pope on how to handle this whatever advice you get will be wrong. The DOT, DMV, State Police, local law enforcement or the dog catcher will pull you over and interpret the law differently. Your best option is to not place any decals/copmany logos on the towing vehicle. Place a placard stating that the vehicle is "Not for hire". Register the tow vehicle as an RV.

You might pull into a weigh station entering a state and get a clean pass. Then enter another one on the same day in the same state and get hassled. I've been in transportaion and logistics for 20+ years dealing with the DOT/DMV/ICC issues related to transportation. I can tell you from experience, it is up to the interpritation of the guy with the fancy hat, gun and matching chrome bracelets to tell you how "compliant" you are.
I almost never wake up cranky, I usually just let her sleep in.
