Deep pocket propulsion vehicle?  Sure.

Shutting it down?  That's going to take up a lot more real estate than achieving the speed.

You're traveling at better than 1/4 mile per second.

Whoa, Nellie . . .

Manned or unmanned?

Wheel driven or thrust propelled?

Some part of the vehicle touching the ground or water at all times?

Over what distance?

Clarify yourself.

Oh btw, NO! If taken in the context of current LSR requirements.

To answer Dreamweaver:

Manned and driven by Andy Green
Jet and rocket power
All four wheels in contact with the ground at all times as required by FIA regs
Two runs in opposing directions over the same measured mile or kilo within 1hr - also as required by FIA regs
Not sure what other current LSR requirements you think there are apart from the above.

Can it be done? To quote Ron Ayers prior to the ThrustSSC build decision, "only if the research shows it's probable rather than possible". I doubt that much has changed this time although nothing can ever be guaranteed. But then that's what record breaking is all about surely.

Why do you doubt it?

To repeat an oft heard quote, "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?"
Sure 1000 mph is possible. The current record is 763. Our Air Force has hit 6,416 mph with an unmanned rocket sled. Somewhere in between is the limit of human tolerance and the rule book.
Hmmm....those space shuttles have some really cool solid fuel rockets that we could bolt some wheels onto........
Will weld for beer

Kent,

He is claiming a speed record of 118 mph, I am sure Andy would have none of it...
