What class?
« on: May 25, 2009, 06:42:09 PM »
Noob question

If I were to bring a stock '01 Toyota Tundra to Speed Week, minus headers and duals, what class would I run in?

Thanks

The safety equipment will be the big hurtle.  Speed Week requires full SCTA safety equipment.  The 130/150 club is not as strict.
It cost me about $10,000 worth of safety equipment to run SpeedWeek in a Pickup.  Rollcage, firesuit, firesystem, etc.

Not trying to scare you, but if you want to run on the salt, the 130/150 club have lower requirements than SpeedWeek.

If you step up for the fire suit , roll cage, fire bottles, blowshield, roof rails, windshield clips and so on. Which I doubt you will. And you had a 3 liter motor it would be a F/ Production pickup. Bigger than 3 liter and smaller than 261 cubic inches E/PP. Bigger than 261 but smaller than 305 D/PP, And so on. You really need a rule book to bring reality to the table.

I knew it would cost some money, I wasn't expecting to get out there and run. The 130/150 club seems more realistic. Can someone please elaborate on this? It is a V8 4.7 liter or 285 CI.

Go to the USFRA web site listed on the cover page. All of  their requirements are listed for the 130/150 club. Good luck and hope you can make your start at the WOS meet.
Oh yeah, welcome to the world of LSR :-)

I figure you could do it cheaper then 10K.

Where am I going worng?

(current record for E/PP is 126 mph)

roll cage....$2500 (if you pay to have it done)
fire suit.....$625
bottles......$750
Seat and belts.....$400

Looking at the rules, the MAJOR things I need are a helmet, fire extinguisher and drive shaft loop. I think I might just get a rollbar installed and mount a harness to that for the extra safety.

A new helmet (Snell SA2000 or later) will run $800.00 for SCTA/BNI no open face helmets are allowed. Might find something at a  lower price.

I think I might buy a beater truck to drive every day and spend a few grand (ok more than a few)  on getting my Tundra ready to go FAST!!! Have I been bitten by the speed bug? Yes, I think I have. :-D

Big, you will be money ahead if you build it as a real race truck the first time. To upgrade will cost a lot more later. Follow the suggestions by the guys that have been doing this for a long time. There is no cheap way to go racing. All of the rules have been written from experience of others incidents. As the SCTA/BNI meet is large in turn out you should come up and visit the event before you build anything. Bring a camera and a note book, ask lots of questions and see what it takes to run a vehicle and what support equipment you need to bring and get through a week on the salt.

You might also go up to Maxton and see what they are doing. Talk to Joe Timney and others for their input. You can even test your vehicle before going to the salt. You will be happy you did.

Firesuit $1300 (Simpson SFI 20)
Rollcage was $6000 (big truck, wanted to go safe)
Fire system $1500 (two systems, wanted to go safe)
Nickles and dimes after that.
Gloves, boots, helmet, etc.

Yes, you could go half that amount.  I've already got 10lbs of titanium in my body, and survived two fires, so I got wise.

Safety is in the eye of the beholder.  Personally I would buy the best I can, no wait, the best there is.  If I can't afford it, I'll quit eatting to get the money to buy it.  Money isn't always an indicator at how good things are.  I've seen to many 'safety crews' that shouldn't be blessed with the name.  Never count on anyone saving you, especially in the middle of nowhere.  What if you get knocked out and the truck starts on fire?
