How much horsepower
« on: February 09, 2008, 03:18:33 PM »
If you have a motorcycle that has 160hp and will run 180mph, how much horsepower will the same bike need to run 205mph?

Power required goes up as the cube of the speed increase.

(205/180)^3 x 160 = 236.35hp

It won't make a difference which it is, the number will be 236 as it is based on the HP to run the first speed with the same configuration and if I'm wrong I'll buy you a "duals"  8-),

It all rests on the ps bit. When I tested my first bike in the wind tunnel, we started off needing 210hp to reach 200mph, and four hours later needed 137hp to reach 200mph. It sure was a steep learning curve with the MIRA guys, and a great lesson learned, even with the enormous headache afterwards! They got the electric jigsaw out and cut bits off. I tested the nose section as was, but then cut that off and modified it as they suggested. It had taken one of my students a year to make, and I owed it to him to at least try it....MIRA were right, and the modifications worked great. The air needs to be soft on the front, and clean off at the back. Then you can see how many horses you need!

The formula is dead nuts accurate if all you're changing is the horsepower level. If you change something else, especially something big like CdA, then of course it doesn't apply anymore.
