"there is always going to be a small percentage of idiots screwing things up.  In the navy we called them 10% rs'"
Now we call them 47%ers

My view of camping on the mud flats at the bend is like getting to Pismo Beach at low tide and camping as close to the ocean as possible :-o

After 2 years of being rained out I agree! I like the 47% part  :-D

Glen, regardless of what is posted I find it sad that 500+ folks have viewed this thread and not posted, either out of fear, apathy or they are BLM folks lurking, since the BLM do work for US!

Hang on to your hats, because our Congress is in the process of approving a new Interior Dept. Director. and all bets on rules are off with this one.

If you were to follow along with the Save The Salt information when you come into the site here you might see how/why the BLM is "enforcing" some of its rules for land use.

I believe the 47% include a lot of the Senior Citizens Timing Association members.

I'm sure these rules have always existed, but know the way I have read the news letters, they are going to enforce them.

We have been beating up the BLM pretty hard and publicly for a while about not managing the flats. You can't be too surprised that thier counter is to over manage. Can you?
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

The BLM has been getting a bashing because of there lack of positive response to the salt depletion situation but I think we can all respect their conserns that the bend has become like a "zoo on the loose in the wild west". As usual there are a small number of wankers that phuck it up for the rest. Hopefully the BLM doesn't get off on a tangent like some of the campers have. The BLM patroled the bend pretty hard in 2011 & that didn't bother me in the slightest because I wasn't one of those wanker's..

That the BLM police the event is admirable.  We all respect the work they do to keep the event managed and civil.  We just desire more oversight of the resource depletion that is occurring with the mining operation. If the current reports are accurate, at some point there will be no event as the surface won't support it. The last thing anyone wants is the Bonneville Mud Flats.

Joe, we already have the Bville Mud Flats.  See for yourself -- by going down the international course to around the nine mile and beyond.  You'll find mostly soil/mud with some salt spots here and there.  It's been like that for the past few years that Nancy and I have been going to the Shootout - and probably longer.  Worse -- it's difficult to get the salt replenishing liquid to go that far from the point at which it gets dumped onto the flats.  Maybe we've got to lay back for a few thousand years to let nature do the repair.  I don't care to wait that long, though, and I bet you don't want to do so either.

I am with you on this Slim.  The biggest issue is how much longer can it be preserved.   It has taken only 50 some odd years to deplete what nature took a thousand years to create.  I wonder if our grand children will be able to enjoy it.
