Please understand, first of all, that I, too, have boatloads of respect and admiration for Marlo in his various various guises as a racer.
But -- have the rest of you noticed that, when looked upon by members of the community in which you live or work -- that we, as Bonneville racers, are pretty much universally respected by them? Those unwashed - the non-racers -- see us as the girls and guys that are actually living the dream that so many have -- racing at full speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats! Scads of folks around here, for instance, treat me with a bit of awe and show interest in the smallest tidbits of racing stories -- because to them -- we are all way more interesting than the run of the mill folks that line the streets and fill the cafeterias. We're IT - and they like to vicariously live their dreams through our personal exploits.
We're all, to someone, the most interesting man/woman in the world. Quite a rush, isn't it? Especially when I (or you) sum up our personal stories and realise that we, too, are just a doofus that happens to have taken that one further step beyond the regular life that most folks have.
Best wishes to Marlo for his journey - and for eventually attaining his goal. You, too, fellow racers.
