I wish someone would do a story on Gene Burklands tire test "machine" and his tire tests.
The words "high tech" have a new meaning when you hear how Gene tested the tires that the manufacturers couldn't seem to do.
Pictures would make the story even better..............
Here is hoping that Gene, Betty, and Tom keep on running the 411.

One thing that we need to remember is that Tom Burkland is a very accomplished engineer and his knowledge of engineering methods and systems is very well displayed in his, and his father and mother's, streamliner. The first time I ever met Tom was at Peterson Equipment where he was chief engineer and they built some extremely sophisticated machinery. Tom is a great guy and an exceptional engineer. Although the Burkland car may have been built in a Montana home shop it was completely engineered by a very talented team.

Man I am so torn about how I feel about Al's liner.  I don't honestly think I would enjoy seeing it run by someone other than Al.  I guess the reality of it is that I hope it never runs again unless Al is driving it.

I'll second that.

Asking questions is one's only way of getting answers.

The rational person lets verified facts form or modify his opinion.  The ideologue ignores verified facts which don't fit his preconceived opinions.

You know, the unique nature of each machine requires a steep learning curve to even approach the maximum performance that the car has

achieved by the builder.

Sorta like Burt Munro's record.........the performance lasts in the name of the creator.

Yeah, the Charlie Brown, "Peanuts Special" liner still is known that way but Jack and Brett Harris both got into the 2 Club in the car.

Flatfire is more of a garage built car than their liner.

OK, let's assume that Flatfire is "home made".

Speed Demon on the other hand, may have more than 1500 hours of computer time.

You know the method of hand shaping the form so that you can lay up a mold and make the body?

Speed Demon's body was designed on a computer, the mold was machined directly on a 5 axis mill.

And who made the body? Ron when to Burt Rutan at Scaled Composites. I hear rumors of Kevlar and Carbon Fiber, but I really think the body is made out of cubic dollars.

And yeah, he didn't get a record at Bonneville and the 401 was only "an exit speed".

Can't wait for the Top Speed Shootout!
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.
