Ray - I missed you all day with the my team responsibilities  ... I will try and find you in the morning ... Joe

Don't sweat it, Joe.  You're wearin several hats and it's hard to wear 'em all the time.  I did the same thing at WoS last year (driving Texican's "race truck" and tryin to do coverage) and it'll be more of the same this year, since I'll have my own car and 2 guys that I've promised rides to as well.

Anyway, your photos are very much appreciated.

Here are some non-racing (more or less) photos to staqrt the day.

First one is the track map that kinda fills in where the staging lane map left off.

Then a list of AMA records as of yesterday.

and lovely Linnea with her alien antennae and a smile.

I'm gonna cruise the pits to see what I can find.

If it has, I haven't seen it.  I'll see what I can find as I cruise the pits.

It didn't take long to find out about Max's liner.  After I passed the CCCP (USSR?) pit with a Swiss flag (?!?!) I ran into Bo Miller who told me that he was in Impound with his Triumph after qualifying for a record.  He must have been on the short or "Mountain" course cuz he said the bike handled like a dream.  I'll get photos of it when I can.

But right after that, I stumbled upon the Lambky pits and saw the liner in quite a state if disassembly.  I talked to Stainless (Bob Steele) who told me that they'd made one "shakedown" run and the course was so rough that it shook all sorts of things loose...including tripping the mercury switch that controls the main chute...which then deployed and just made matters worse.  A bearing for an idler pulley was also damaged, so Max went into town to get one (along with some coffee.)

Then, after pulling the Burb around so I could edit and post the photos, Belen Wagner came by and introduced herself.  She and her dad are both racing, she's on her sit-on bike, he's in a streamliner called "Der Fliegende Thunfisch" (The Flying Tuna) which has a 2-stroke moter....and an exhaust leak which allows the smoky, oily stuff into the cockpit.  They were trying to find the location of the leak when I asked if I could get a quick photo od dad and daughter.

More as I get it.

You seem some pretty strange things on the salt.  When I saw 2 women heading out from the pit area, one of whom had a broom and the other a camera, I knew what was gonna happen, having seen the shots of this sort last year.

The woman on the broom is Rita and just became Mrs. Larry Cason this morning.  I guess I missed the wedding.  :)

I didn't get the other woman's name, but I would have forgotten it, anyway.

Here's the result shot, followed by the "how they did it" shot.

First:  Both the Flying Tuna and Max's Black Lightning were running as I was finishing my tour of the pits.  Fingers are crossed for both of 'em.

Shots from the pits:

Ronnie Scoggins' Honda CR 500 2-stroke powered sidecar liner

Charles Steinman on his BMW just after a run...he was on his way to get his timing slip...I dunno how fast he ran.

Lars workin on his blown nitro-burning flathead Harley...he hasn't gotten it to run yet.

And a kool vintage Indian parked in the pits.

more pit shots coming....

The picture of Charles Steinman, sitting on his bike -- is a great one for him to use as a Christmas card or a photo in his office.  Good background, well-lighted, the mountains and the sky present fine contrast.  You did well, Ray.  See if he'll buy it.
