I don't see how you'd be that better off than camping on the BLM property at the Bend in the Road for free.

Pretty hard to beat that price.

The Speedweek room situation is only going to get worse. When the economy turns around, and the casinos can fill the hotel with gamblers on that first weekend during Speedweek, no rooms will be available to us at any price. Gamblers can easily blow thru $250 bucks a night in the casino, and that's who they want in the rooms, because that is how the casinos make their $$$.
I know it's not even a consideration, but I hope someday we can work something out with the BLM to allow camping on the salt. If each camper paid $500 for this opportunity, we could provide additional security (I personaly believe as racers we could police ourselves), extra facilities, not to mention a ton of money for the SCTA/BLM. ($500 x 100 campers =  $50,000, $500 x 200 campers = $100,000). All campers would be in a designated area, with strict rules and guidelines. Anybody violating these rules will be removed from the salt, period!

I think the income would be more like ... 1 [thats you] times X 500 - security and facilities= sink hole

I'd be against camping on the salt -- for the security aspect.  With all due respect -- I don't trust that 100% of the campers there could resist the temptation to not touch and maybe scratch or move my race bikes -- much less resist stealing my tools or pit bike.  Nah, let folks remain at the Bend in the Road.  It's close -- and the salt per se doesn't hold many benefits over the Bend.

The first time Nancy and I went to the Salt -- Speedweek '01 -- we flew to SLC and rented a CruiseAmerica RV.  Better still -- we paid for a 22' --  the smallest they had -- but that one wasn't available so we got upgraded, free, to a 32'.  I don't remember the cost, but even allowing for inflation and such -- I'm sure it was much less than a grand.  It wasn't cheap -- but it was great to park next t pre-stage and watch the "parade" of vehicles moving towards the line - while sitting in air conditioned comfort.  The we'd drive back to KoA and park for the night and enjoy the water and sewer and electricity hookups -- no paying for dumping or generator time.  By now the price may be that high-sounding $1000 -- but it's still better than spending the same, or more, on a casino room and still having to buy restaurant meals when you could be making your own.

Just because somebody tries to bring up a solution to the Speedweek room situation that you don't agree with means you have to be an asshole.

jww36, you've discovered the curse-word filter that I've got running on the Forum.  I try to keep things as not-foul-mouthed as possible, both for the sake of viewers (we don't need to see that Forum member so-and-so can swear) and also for the sake of potential and real advertisers.  Thanks for testing it for me.

Camping at the bend is free is good.

Camping on the salt for $500 is better.

I'm kinda slow.  Explain how paying $100 a day for camping (that is free at the Bend) is better.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

In the past there have been a few that tried to stay in trailers etc. until after dark, security can and will have them arrested and removed from the salt.
The rule is for everyone and not worth the risk.

At each SCTA/BNI event volunteers are asked to take their turns being the evening "pit nazis", meaning we get to drive laps of the pits and the rest of the event area to make sure everyone is off the salt by closing time -- which is 8PM, no excuses, no extensions.  Nancy and I take our turns, and more often than not we have to shoo out a crew that's busy wrenching and simply forgot what was the time.  We also get a few groups that are well into their beers - and can't even focus on the clock display on the phone.  Whatever -- we urge them to leave.  First offense is when we report them to Roy Creel or Don Ferguson (race director) -- and the tardy racers find themselves not running the next day, even if they've waited in line for hours.  The second offense is a visit from the sheriff to urge them off the salt, and if that doesn't work -- the officer/deputy can and will arrest the violators.

Pit Nazi - everyone should try it at least once.

Jon;
As a passionate newcomer to LSR, and Landracing.com, it's kind of sad when someone new to the sport  tries to come up with possible solutions to a serious problem with the Speedweek event on Landracing.com, and a "Hero Member" makes a smart a.. comment about the blog.
I realize the bend in the road is a nice oasis if it is dry. But if it rains enough to make the bend inhabitable, but not enough to cancel the event, where will these Speedweek participants go? Maybe the chances of rain in August are slim. The Speedweek room situation doesn't effect me as much as it effects the older retired competitors who are living on a fixed income and see the outrageous increase in hotel costs in Wendover. I have to believe this situation is keeping a few from coming, and may keep this sport from growing.
All this said, as a "dumb sh.t" newbie, I've learned my place. The new young blood coming into this sport should keep their opinions to themselves and not get involved.

jww36, I'm ready to apologize -- because I didn't mean, in any way, to be a smart-butt.  I was re-stating the position that has stood for years, despite repeated suggestions that (on Salt camping) be allowed.  If it weren't brought up a couple of times, at least, during any one racing season -- if it weren't we would be stunned.  I was just pointing out the lengths that the sanctioning organizations go through to assure the racers that absolutely nobody is allowed overnight - for a multitude of reasons.

Now it's your turn to realize that maybe you are wrong.  We don't want you to turn tail and run, but rather to hang out here and mingle and share and enjoy the Forum and all of land speed racing.
