Lars, I think you understand the situation very well, it truly is capitalism. Look what the gas stations are doing this week.
I run into people on the street who would love to go but money is tight for most of them and until they manage that first trip and experience the mind blowing feeling it is only a bucket list item.

Are you going to make it to South Carolina?

When I first signed up for Speed Week in 2000, we knew nothing about how the hotel rooms sold out in minutes like a rock concert. We were fortunate to get reservations for a couple of tent sites in the overflow area at the KOA. Nothing like pitching the tent on a raised gravel pad, which I always compared to a kitty litter box and having to return to that oven after a day on the salt. We certainly didn't have to worry about leaving early for impound each morning and cooked breakfast daily until we discovered the Red Garter just above us. The memories of my first Bonneville experience are priceless...

Having enjoyed camping and the cabins at KOA and I think I've stayed at all of the casinos at one time or the other, I believe the best bang for the buck is the Motel 6, I only wish we'd discovered it sooner.

I've yet to stay at the "Bend in the Road" but that's always an option, it looks like an event itself. I just haven't found the right "vintage" motor home.

One other note that is relevant to this thread:

The Stateline RV park that was located to the east of the Nugget Casino parking structure is no more.  It's now a parking lot for a new Shell truck stop.

Lars,  How are you?  You forgot Willie Hertz from Germany.   NSU 350cc, 1956, 189.00.  And Hans Mueller also NSU 125cc at 150 in 1956.  Both records still stand.  : - )

"More spectators than racers and race-crew members ?
I don't think that's the case. And IF it is; then why is that a bad thing ?"

When it comes to rooms, it is.  And it is the case.

"BTW: If you go to BUB, there are hardly any spectators."

That's right -- who wants to just see motorcycles.  They turned down our Street Roadster entry.  But the bikers better hurry up -- all the SCTA open records are being filled in.  Besides wiring your drain, finding the right pair of tires, and choosing the right lanyard, there're hours of research to be done with the Rule Book to find a record to limp a couple of miles on and brag about later.

No, I haven't had a drink yet today -- that's next.

Right. Motorcycle racers are second class racers at Bonneville
just wiring their drain, finding the right pair of tires, choosing the right lanyard, an open record and limping a couple of miles

Goodness.

No having to wait in long lines is a good selling point as well for BUB

Motorcycles racers perhaps?

Doing good Lars.   Got the sump plug wired, tires sorted and I'm practicing limping.

AMA records don't mean much to me and I have a few, example..a few years ago I made a pass at went 250+ and qualified for the record..I said no thanks and got permission to make a celebration lap back up the course..
I was there only for the money that was being offered for the fastest open wheeled bike so I made one run and left..I hope for the AMA record setters that have set records that the AMA does not abandon and then "forget" about the records as they have done in the past..

Hopefully the Bub event can continue to be held so the bikes has a place to run without having to worry about cars getting in the way..that way they can make pass after pass after pass without waiting in any lines..

Stan..keep the bar open...

John, you raise an interesting point about the AMA records.... when BUB started the event, the records were pretty much where they all got left off at in 1978....

Does anyone remember why the AMA got "kicked out of Speedweek?"..... I was at all of the Speedweeks in the 1970s and our team was racing motorcycles back then.... the AMA steward was a guy named Earl Flanders..... for years, he had been charging ALL motorcycle record setters a record certification fee of $20.00 payable in CASH ONLY! No receipt was issued. He claimed that the fees were to cover his living expenses while he was at the salt.... well, in 1978, he doubled the fee to $40.00.... and a few car guys who were involved in a few motorcycle efforts anfd vice versa, got wingd of this.... the SCTA-BNI, incidentally, in their deal with the AMA, had to pay Earl Flanders $3500 for his time at the salt AND pick up his living expenses.

EARL WAS SCAMMING ALL THE RECORD SETTERS!..... The SCTA-BNI did an investigation and to a person, all record setters, for years, answered affirmatively when asked if they were forced to pay Earl a cash fee in order to receive the certification...... when the AMA was confronted with this, they, so to speak, circled the wagons and defended Earl.... at which time a decision was made bt the SCTA-BNI to take over the whole motorcycle program themselves.... My brother and I were actually two of the inspectors who, along with Jack Dolan who was that eara's equivalent of thech chair and head motorcycle inspector, got the program going at Bonneville Speedweek 1979.....

I, for one, do not mourn the absence of the AMA.

Hey, I hear that Obama's justice department is looking into discrimination at racing at Bonneville, they feel BUB is not treating the car racers fair, being BUB is only for motorcycles, where Speed Week, World of Speed and World Finals has no discrimination and alows both cars and bikes, this may go to the Supreme Court!!
