Judging from the list of who will be going after which record, am I correct in assuming that the Speed Demon crew is going to be busy making changes?  If they're still running the turbo'd 299-inch SBC, it looks like they just got the I-9 record.   Will they pull the turbo (or just install a similar non-turbo engine) for II-9?  Is the old half-a-hemi four going back in for I-8?  Will they really need a bigger engine for I-10, or can they set a record in that class with an engine that's actually less than 5 liters?

Thanks again to everybody who's down there on the Salt for the reports and pictures.  See you for World Finals!

Speed Demon is here for as many as they can.  They can take off the turbo, they can run the four cylinder, and they've got a bigger engine - something about 350" -- to go into the bigger class.  The rules state the motor must be in the class in which they run -- no using a small engine in a bigger class.

Where's RaytR?  Out at the other end, or is it time to organize a search party?  Jon, you're doing a stellar job.  It's just me out in the Internet peanut gallery wondering.

Ray Therat left the power supply  for his laptop at home. It will be delivered tomorrow and so

he's on "radio silence" for a short short.

I can imagine that he has shot up a few rolls of digital film and we will see some before long.

He may download them to SSS computer.

But while he's down -- he's not out.  Here are the five photos he got to me:

Okay, lunch is winding down, the creme brulee is being finished, and we'll be  back in operation soon.  They've started the Spectre car in the pits -- so it'll run.  Don't know if they'll be on the course today, though.  back soon.

First of all, they found it!  The wheel from the turbo on the Speed Demon has come back to earth!

It's what went away on the return run.  Data showed it went about the 3 1/2 - 4 mile, just after the boost went to about 35 pounds (which is about five over Turbonetic's suggested max.).  Dan from the SD team used the data to know where to look -- and found it about 200 yards to the side of the race course.  Here's what it looks like, and Danny, the guy that found it.

More photos of the wheel:

Here's where the shaft is "friction-welded" to the wheel:

In other updates -- Speed by Spectre, Speed Demon, and Nish all report they'll be ready to run in less than an hour.  Don't blame me if that time estimate is wrong -- I'm just the messenger. . .

Mike Charlton has just fired the jet motor for the first time out here.  What a spectacle.  He says that he's ready to give 'er and see just how fast the bike'll go.  Last year's 200 was test -- this year is for a balls-to-the-wall high speed.  Best wishes, Mike.  I'm going to go over there for some photos.

Let me take this "commercial" break to thank the many of you that are sending donations during the Shootout - and also those that sent a buck or a bunch during the previous events.  I'm gratified that you all find it worth your while - to thank me for the absolute blast I have out here giving you the information that I'm lucky enough to gather.

Thanks, and keep those Paypal buttons hopping -- means I don't have to beg so often during the rest of the year.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking, Jon.

So here are a few.  First, Mike on the bike getting ready for a test fire:

Now a series I took as he fired the engine.  It spins up to make some compression, then gets fuel, then ignition.  This series was about a minute long as he'd spin it, fuel it, fire it, shut off ignition, and back and forth a few times.  Remember -- these photos are all a few seconds apart.

And you think Burt Munro's neighbors used to get upset when he'd run up the engine late a night.  How'd you like to live near Mike?

Here's a wide shot of one side of the pits:

The Nish car is on the trailer.  The body isn't on it as yet, but at least they're moving the car into transport position.  Spectre isn't ready -- bodywork not on, they're working on the car.  Poteet and Main still wrenching on the replacement turbo.  Ack is running the bike now and then -- static tests, waiting for either no wind - or tomorrow.  Nearburg's car is on the shaded apron -- I'll go see what's up with them.  No sign of Scott Horner yet.

There's at least one Ack motor again. . .rumble, rumble, shut off.  Start up, shut off.

Okay, John -- I'll tell 'em.  John isn't just passing gas -- I wrote the post about donating after I got a donation from him.  He, like many of youse guys, keeps the site going.  We've got a few advertisers -- but I try to limit those as much as is reasonable -- so you get almost 100% land speed racing and as little as possible advertising.  And when you see an ad -- please patronize the advertisers.  They help us stay focused on racing.

Enough thanks -- the Spectre is getting ready to run, and Nish car is about 15 minutes from ready, too, the team reports.  No word recently from the Speed Demon pit, although just now I heard them running the engine.
