1972 honda ct70 (minitrail) speed record try
« on: December 17, 2009, 02:27:15 PM »
I'm thinking of building up my ct70 to make a go at a speed record.

Already figure I have the best shot in the 175cc class.

Bike will have an under 175cc gasoline engine (not honda),maybe NO if legal, aftermarket wheels, custom handlebars, sprockets.

I plan on riding it there from LA,swapping bars and engine. Then doing the deed.

Long distance rides on it are not a problem. Already made it to Sturgis.

Who thinks it can be done?

I think it can be done...question is, why?  Never mind....I know why, duh!

Good luck.

Sure, but you will have to meet tire speed ratings for the class record.

A two stroke would be the best bet in that engine class, but makes the road trip slightly problematic.

I hope somebody will be helping carry all your gear for you!

If I could find a 2 smoke that would work with the factory motor mounts I would use it.

They should have an different cc ruling for the 2 strokes. Same as motocross.

I would have no problem breaking the current record if allowed an 239cc 4 stroke.

It would be best if you started with a rule book.

Those 10" wheels are not legal.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Come run the 2-stroke at ECTA (Maxton).  We've got three motorcycle basic engine classes -- two-stroke, four-stroke, and rotary.  And yes, all three classes have participants.  There aren't a lot of rotary bikes -- but I remember teching a rotary Suzuki in '09, I think it was.

If you're talking about an SCTA record, good luck.

Your bike, with a non-Honda engine in the 175cc class would need to best a 125.220 record in gas and a 120.622 record on NOS.
That would be the A-G & A-F classes, no streamlining. But you would need larger wheels like Dean said.

Almost everything is possible.

Actually, I should have said "an SCTA/BNI record".

FIM is different. As is BUB/AMA.

I think your CT-70 may be legal at BUB. At the last BUB race there was a guy (from Switzerland I think) who ran a minibike. The rules only state that NON-STOCK wheels must be a minimum of 15". So that means you can run your stock wheels less than 15". Scooter Grubb has a great photo in his yearbook of this guy running down the course. Looks cool. Picture credit to Scooter.
