Anybody have GPS Coordinates for pits or race course in 2009
« on: August 28, 2009, 07:23:40 PM »
Howdy All,

Does anybody have some GPS coordinates for race course or the pits from Speed Week? I would like to have some precision longitude and latitude if possible. There is a reason for my madness that I will share when I am done shuffling numbers.

Thanks in advance. :-D

Regards to All,
HB2 :-)

These are off one of the weather sites.

 See what you think .

   40.73333  and 114.0033
5 mph in pit area (clothed)

From a real recent download of Google Earth I see the pit area from a ? event and centered on it to get

  40 48' 30" 15  by 113 49' 15" 51

Notice the change to minutes, seconds, etc.

Possibly  too vague.

Elevation was 4218' by the by.
5 mph in pit area (clothed)

You can see cars in the pits in this mapgoogle page, not sure what year it was but I think it was 2007 or 2008 that someone noticed it.

Looks like World Finals in 2006 to me.  Too few vehicles in the pits to be Speed Week, pits too far from the start to be World of Speed, salt looks dry and that's the way it was in October of 2006.

Michael, where did the big rocket land?

FREUD

The 7 footer landed about 1/8 mile NW of pits from an altitude of around 1500 and the 3 footer landed about 1/8 mile down and into the edge of the pits from around 6k feet. Spot on in my book! Last year was hard to beat when I landed both sections of the 7 footer draped over the porta john 50 feet outside our pits.

I am absolutely anal about safety and flight conditions. See me way out there launching in the pic?. That's a crop downed frame form a picture taken with a 400mm lens. No pit launches, no launches with surface or higher altitude winds risking errant air frames. No visitors at the immediate launch area. The only "surprise" I ever had was when I had two objects thermal. One was recovered and the other was last seen floating North to Idaho at 3k feet and rising. I have flow Mach Busters but I launch those over a mile North of the pits out towards Silver Island. With speeds in the 700 MPH plus range you would be careful too! Good clean gearhead fun.

Oh..and look at where we pit..I have about as much chance of hitting impound or populated areas as I do the moon. 8-)

Hey Michael!  The week end before Speed week was the UROC (Utah Rocket Club) rocket meet.  I was ther for the Sat. and Sunday launchings.  They really sent up some amazing rockets.  Check out a guy named Randall Redd,  the King of the odd rockets.   Quite a show.       Crow.

If I can ever get some spare time to advance my licensing I will show up with some really cool rockets at Speedweek.
I met this guy in 2006 at Speedweek. http://www.the-rocketman.com/  He saw some of my launches and came to find me.  He was a very nice guy. In the rocket world it's like Andy Green coming to the start line to check out your car/bike. 8-)
