They don't need much run-up -- so are stafrting about a mile or two before the lights,

Kilo   186

Mile 185

Exit 207

Snowmobile is stopped.  Course watchers say they've never seen  a sled go that fast.

With that exit speed, sounds like they should start a little further away from the lights!
Each unexpected discovery is first ridiculed, then objected to and finally considered self evident

The sled is a Yamaha, with an R1 (motorcycle model) engine running alchol and 3% nitromethane.  It's run by the G-Force team.  It uses (what looks like ) UHMW front wheels instead of skis, and a pretty-traditional belt for the drive. They had a special belt and special drive wheel but it failed on the first run - so went back to the basics.  The engine drives a variable-pitch sheave that the rider locks up at maximum ratio -- and that failed on the first run, too, so has been repaired.

Here's some more:

The Saltmobile (we've been "asked" to use this term -- since the thing runs on the Salt, not the Snow) is runing on an open record, so their 185.535 mile/186.768 kilo speeds are qualifiers.  I think they have a two-hour window to run the return -- not sure, haven't heard, but since FIM Charlie is here to sanction -- I'll guess they're classed like a bike) and I know they're planning a return run in the next little while.

Buckeye Bullet just reported they're doing well and should be ready for a run in the next two hours or less.

Speed Demon crew just radioed that they found water in a cylinder so will pull the head and be out for another hour or two.

Oh, yeah, and a railroad train is heading east towards SLC.  Never let it be said that you don't hear all of the important news on landracing.com!

Freight train.  Two locomotives, general freight -- hopper cars, box cars, a few tank cars.  Engineer wearing striped outfit, smoking Lucky Strikes.  I couldn't see any more details.

Other stuff:

The saltmobile had about 7% slip between driven belt and driving wheel -- so will use an extra 1/4 - 1/2 mile this time to get up to speed.  And the top speed they ran (that 207 exit) was without the overdrive, which is broken.  They're going to make another run in a few minutes to get a record in the book -- and then maybe make yet another return run on that newer speed.   Dan Warner is standing by to award a 200 MPH Club hat if they get a record over 2 bills.

Speed Demon has a bent rod -- that'll take a while to fix.  Still analyzing if it's the end of the effort for the week -- or if they can fix the V-8 or what.

Hey, better Yahama than "The Tuning Fork People"  (Their logo looks like a tuning fork, doncha know?).

Snomo is on the line and ready to go.  Will post this and then explain ultra high molecular weight.

Saltmobile (gotta keep trying to remember that) is on the salt and getting ready to go.  They'll run an extra half mile, like I said, and also will be ready to turn around and go back yet again -- like I said.  This vehicle turns around quickly -- not much time for me to tell you about Mike Charlton, who just came over to say they're hoping to make a timed pass today.

Track has been locked down and is ready for the Saltmo to make the run.

I have a borrowed FM radio and I'm at the timing stand for the saltmobile's run.  It's real nice to hear what's going on...thanks to the Bullet team who lent it to me...big thanks.

Saltmobile engine is running and warming -- should be ready in two-three minutes.

Rider has helmet on his head.

Vehicle is under way.

Clear mile 5.   Entry speed  195.955

kilo   198.485

mile   198.008

exit  198.525

That'll be an FIM record if it's certified, and they'll now turn around (assuming they don't find anything broken) and do it again in the other direction to up the record.  I don't have the record average speeds yet.

Congrats to the Saltmobile Crew!
How's the wind?  If no wind, they might have lost some MPH from heat-soak.
