Questions about the classifications...
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:36:08 PM »
Hello I'm a big fan of land speed racing and I have a dream of that one day visit the Bonneville Speed Week. But because I´m living in sweden it´s pretty expensive to let my dream come through. So I´m building myself a "Old style" look a like coupe of a Volkswagen typ 1.
So now I have a question about the classification. What classification should my car have (chopped 6" whit a 2156cc engine) if the year was 1963?

Because I´m not that good in english I´m sending a pic so you guys know what I´m talking about.

/kindly regards Henrik

I'll second that. If you are serious about running at Speedweek you really need to go to the home page and click on SCTA. Buy a rule book and questions such as this should be answered. The 3 liter Gas Comp Coupe class record is around 172 mph. You will need all the safety equipment that running at that speed requires. You can't just show up from thousands of miles away and run. Make sure you have done all the preparation that you need to do, before arriving in Wendover. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick answers. This car is not a car I´m building for racing on Bonneville. This car is just a "look a like" how I could have been looking in the mid 60´s. So the class should be F/GCC?
It´s time for some lettering so I want to know that the class is right before I´m start to paint.

I forgot to mention that that is one of the coolest VWs I have seen, don't forget to put a number on it as well.
Post a picture on this thread when you are done.

Thanks a lot!  :-D
That means that I've been reach my goal of building an Bonneville Coupe look a like.
Any suggestions of lettering's? I've search the web after some vintage Speed Week logos but I didn't find any. Should I've some "old records" on it or how should it looked in the mid 60's? If so has anybody any suggestions of records and years?
Was it the same classifications in the mid 60's that it is today?

You guys are the REAL hero's of our time!

Most don't put records on their cars because they disappear or change...
Look at the old Bonneville Pics thread and it might give you some ideas of period lettering.

So let me get this straight. Your building a Bonneville look-a-like that's not going to run there, not going to look like a car that actually did run there, have a class on it, have a number on it, and probably going to buy some inspection stickers Bonneville stickers on e-bay right?

The other responders will love this, there was no F/GCC in the 60's...........Good luck

It's still a fun project.

"Questions about the classifictions..."

Just to help out your english, it's classification.

It's only classifictions if Noonan is involved.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

So what is the right classification for this car if it was racing on Bonneville in the 60's?

I got some ideas and now my friend is helping me whit the lettering of my car. Some may like it and some others may not. I hope that some of you guys will like my "tribute" car to one of the biggest speed events in history. I will update whit some pictures when the lettering is done.

Today I believe it would run as F/GCC. In the 60's there was no separation for gas and fuel in Comp Coupe or Modified Roadster so everyone ran fuel. Also I don't believe classes went down to F in CC and MR. I think I can remeber when I was really young my father ran E/MR with a 280 cid Dodge and that was the smallest displacement in the class. But I was about 8 years old so I could be blowing smoke.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

So the right lettering for the class should be E/CC then if I'm understood this right.
I'm so thankful for all the answers I get in this post. :-)

My earilest rule book is the 1966 version with the 1967 revisions stapeled in. I was given it at the 196 Speedweek. Hows that for getting the books out early? Dallas Volk is right. If there were any Volkswagens at Bonneville like yours in the '60s they would have been in E/CC.
