Production class questions
« on: February 13, 2005, 05:58:00 AM »
I am a rookie building my first production class vehicle and I have a few general questions.

 1. Can I remove the side mirrors? (I don't think they would hang on past 120mph!)

 2. Can I run a cowl hood, and does it have to be steel?

 3. What are radiused wheel openings?

 4. Can the vehicle be lowered?

 5. Will the rear end out of a 1999 Chevy S-10 pickup comply with Rule 2.E)

 6. What documents are needed for productions records and manufacturer specs?

 7. Can I use an aftermarket radiator? (Original got smashed,... long story)

Sorry if these sound like rookie questions, but I am a rookie!

 Thanks for taking the time.
 Mark

radius wheel openings--Look at '56 Buick rear wheels. The opening is round and shows the whole tire.  Like that. Everthing else you want to do looks OK by my understanding of the rules.  RF

This is something I was interested in as well.  For example in GT class it says you can run a wing if it is an OEM option, but you have to provide documentation that the wing is OEM, unaltered, and mounted the same way as stock.  I somehow doubt that Toyota for example is going to fax me production drawings?

A picture from a Toyota parts book should establish what you need.

Perhaps the factory sales brochere had a picture of the one you are planning on using?

It definitely would, if that would be sufficient.

We used an Italian Abarth ad back in the 70s to establish the option for headlight covers.  I don't think it has to be an option available in the US, just one that is available on a car with more than 500 produced.

I'm building a Production Mini/Mid Pickup P/MP. It's a Chevy S-10 Extreme. (Extreme Extreme, get it!) Thanks for all the replies, it's a great help!

2. Can I run a cowl hood, and does it have to be steel?
Only if it came from Chevy, available at any dealer as an option (Basic Rulebook) If it's aftermarket, you're modified.

 4. Can the vehicle be lowered?

 Yes

 7. Can I use an aftermarket radiator? (Original got smashed,... long story)

 Yes

Thanks for the info Mike. Maybe D or E engine, unless you loan me your F engine! Whatever we go with, it's going to be very streetable. We're still working on the basic chassis and safety stuff. I'm trying to make it a father daughter project so my 11 year old girl learns something about cars and doesn't grow up too "girly". What kind of truck are you running? By the way, nice to meet another truck guy!

That's exactly what i did last year, Get the safety stuff and Chassis worked out. get some seat time, now the 2.4L 4 banger is in pieces in my garage waiting for go fast bits to arrive.

with regard to the Rear End (2.E) If you have a shop manual check there, that was a BIG worry for me until I found I had Pressed Bearings on the Axles that bolted to the Housing. This was detailed in my Shop manual. If you have a C-Clip rear end then you will have to change it. The basic intent of the rule is If you break an axle it wont come out of the housing and leave you a 3 wheeler with the wheel and axle headed for the sidelines.
