As I recall he crashed in a sports car and broke his neck. Don't remember the year .

As a kid growing up in San Diego, I watched that car being built and rebuilt every year at Nolan's Flying A station at Balboa and Clairemont Drive.  Just across the street from my high school. I was mesmerized, just think a REAL Bonneville race car only a block from MY school.  How cool was that!
