In '57 Jim Culbert crashed his rear engine modified roadster at Bonneville so he built another that was front engine front wheel drive . Bob and Bill Summers liked the design and built the Polywog which lead to the Goldenrod .

The "magazine guy" is Bob Greene, editor of Hot Rod at that time.

A big thanks to Troy Cagle for the pic of the lakester with Don Anderson, Don Hampton and his dad Gary. No doubt the lakester had a fuel hemi in it with that group of guys!! They knew how to make them sing. Troy, any idea how fast it went?

Thanks for posting the great photos of Goldenrod - fantastic shots, truly capturing history!

I'm aware of the car's success in 1965, but can someone fill me in on more of the car's history?  Did the streamliner race at Bonneville in events prior to 1965, or after?

Also, did the Summers Brothers compete on the salt with cars other than Goldenrod?

Keep the photos and information coming - great stuff!   Thanks!

Here are a few shots I took of the Polywog Summers Brothers liner that came before the Goldenrod.

They say it was ill handling but it sure looked and went neat...................

Multy Aldridge -- Mr. Hospitality.  I still have a helmet he loaned me to go drag racing with (I'm bad).  Don't think those polycarbonate ones would pass today.

I have a knit wool cap the Multy gave me and several others one cold night at El Mirage. I think he said that the people at the retirement home made them to keep us warm camping out over night. That hat is not for sale.

Hilborn, Bernier and Orr - Old Bonneville Pictures

Here is another classic just sent to me by Dick Zook.

He found it in his stash and says it must have been given to him.The cars are the original black Stu Hilborn modified lakester, Arnold Bernier'e 4 port Riley modified and Veda Orr's roadster. He guesses it was taken in the early fifties.

Thanx Dick................

Having 1st meeting Multy in 1953 and seeing what a tough person he was inspecting cars I got to thinking there is a reason he was hard on making sure the rules were followed. The same year going to Bonneville I ran across him on the highway out in the middle of nowhere Nevada in his Model T roadster going about 30 mph. I talked to him on the salt and he said it was a trip he loved and was never in a hurry as he didn't want to miss the sights along the way.

Like Rich I also got a few wool caps at the lakes and on the salt. They always had things for any kids as well. He and his wife were the hospitality people for many years. Anyone who knew them loved them and they are so missed.

Yes Glen, when I started putting on the Bonneville Cruise-In at the end of the road in 81 Multy and Vera were always there to help us as well as see to their official duties. Toys for the kids was a big thing and they were both very special people.

I never got a hat but I have extremely good memories because of them. They are missed ! ! !

Glen --

I remember seeing pictures of Multy's roadster with a spare "T" crank lashed to the front axle in case he had to do a little engine work on the way.

Stan

(. . . and the more I think about it, I think the correct last name is Aldrich (?).)

Multy and Vera were special people. i will always remember getting a cup of coffee and a cookie the size of a plate while we waited on the asphalt for the salt to open. My crew and i always got up early so we could spend a few minutes with them. Multy usually had a joke or two, most not really funny but we always laughed. Multy always had an arm full of red garters from the Red Garter Hotel/Casino that he passed out. The ladies on my crew would hang their legs out the window as we drove by and Multy would properly place a gater on each leg. Fun times, they are missed.
