Bob Herda's state of the art streamliner in 1964 SpeedWeek. Don Alderson of Milodon and Randy Scoville were part of this team. - pat

Right to Left: A 20 year old Pat Kinne and Don Johnson, hands on hips (so as not to get dirty) watch Roy Fjastad and Jeff Shipley doing the work after a "small Fuel Fire" at speed in 1963. The rest of these guys were from the Fontana area and a damn rowdy bunch as I remeber it. Jeff can probably throw names out. "Loud" Lyle Anderson was one. Pat

Sparky - In my semi-foggy memory, Herda's car looked as good inside as it does out. The car was very aircraft oriented with the skin "painted" inside with zinc-chromate(?) and aircraft fittings etc. The downfall was an oxygen tank behind the driver, P

He was Skips mentor and personal friend,
Skip feels the real thing that did him in, Herda would not put any DRAINS in the bottom of the car, didn't want to increase drag. Flamable liquids got in the bottom of the car, ignited and sloshed up front when trying to stop---O2 up front in the drivers compartment only increased the problem.

Add a bad fire wall but the leak, solid belly pan, fire and the O2 tube were the killers.

i always loved this car.

i was a course steward at the 1-mile on bob's last run; very sad day!

i stumbled up this picture a couple of weeks ago while surfing the net.

i never knew bob, only met him one; the day before he died.

bob's 'liner was a "traditional" streamliner seen on both sides of the atlantic, but he figured out that you gotta have a vertical stab to keep that sucker straight.

so, i have to wonder if this is an early shot of the car in development.

not just the shape, sans stab, but the number (990d) is awfully close, too.

and where would this have been taken even if it isn't bob?

I found some more Motion I from November 1969...

And then I found this one.  If, in fact, the pro photographer captured everything from the wrong side of the car, then this may be the only one from the right side during the test runs.  However, there's still hope.  These were from a roll of Kodachrome Transparency, processed NOV69H2 and are slide numbers 6, 7, and 16.  So there are still a lot of photos from this roll that are missing.  My guess is that Alex would have given them to whoever was his primary contact on the team.

If you look at the numbers on the car, everything looks smeared at a 45 degree angle.  I don't think the yarn was headed at that angle.  So, if someone has a good way to eliminate that smearring effect, copy this pic and do what you can. You can still see the angles that the yarn is headed in as it would have been originally if you just look at each individual piece and mentally subtract out the smear.  It looks to me that there is still some incredible information captured in this photo...
