Space shuttle landing at Edwards
« on: November 30, 2008, 02:47:29 PM »
Those in Antelope Valley or North end of L.A.basin can run over to Edwards and watch the landing about 13:30 PST. All in the area will hear 2 large sonic booms.
Good Luck!

Years ago hearing a sonic boom used to happen with some frequency. I guess the military got tired of paying for broken windows.

The shuttle sonic boom is a whole 'nother animal. The landing path to Edwards took the shuttle near my house. At roughly Mach 5 and 150,000 ft. That's 28 miles high. It felt like a very large tree had just collapsed the roof. It surprised the heck out of me, and I was watching the landing on the internet and knew the ground track. The whole neighborhood came out on the street to see what the heck was going on.

About 15 years ago I was in Palmdale, about 25 miles from the landing site. I didn't know they were landing. I was sitting at a stop sign at 6:00 a.m. with no one around me. I though someone had just ran into the back of my car.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.
