Engine Seal.

Does anyone have any input on how they provided a way for the engine(car) to be wire sealed after inspection.
I'm assuming that it must have provisions on either head as well as the bottom end?
What is the preferred method by tech?
Any photos?

From what I've seen they use paint/glue on a bolt necessary for head removal.  If your pistons come out the bottom, you probably have to do the pan.

the seal is so that you cant change the cu. in. of the motor --if they seal the oil pan bolts (2 on each side) then you can pull the heads without breaking the seal in case of more port work or a blown head gasket  --on the bikes they use a wire and a lead seal like on your electric meter ---------willie buchta

I have seen the paint/bolt system before in other forms of racing....
the reason I ask is that the rule book says a
"Provision to attach a wire seal to the engine must be provided by the entrant"
I'm just trying to figure out the provision. I understand the reason behind the rule.

The provision is that you need to have the areas in question already drilled out so the inspector can wire the areas together after the engine has been inspected..and remember that even if a seal is still in place any inspector can ask to inspect the engine again for displacement if needed.

It didn't think of that.  That's a good idea.  While I doubt I'd ever change a head gasket at the track (takes about 8 manhours), it's nice to have options.  Guess I will drill a couple pan bolts.

On the GMC and the Plymouth I could just leave out one pan bolt and thats where they put the seal. You might have to drill in from the side to run the wire through. I always got by with one pan bolt on one side.

They used an orange silicon goop between my head and cylinders (busa motor). Second year I forgot to have a provision for sealing.

No one thought it was a big deal.

jonny --if the spark plug is in the center of the bore (busa motor) they pull out the sparkplug and measure the bore and stroke ---if the spark plug isnt ( harley ) and you set a record --if the engine isnt sealed you have to pull the head off---they have always done mine and sheris with a wire and a lead seal--not sure about cars   willie buchta

Put the holes on top. Pan bolts are for people who are much younger than I.
