Moon Discs with Dzus (Pain in the @$$)
« on: August 31, 2008, 05:28:43 PM »
Did I mention that I hate Dzus fastners?  First my hood is fiesty to fasten with them darn Dsuz's,  now my Moon's,, I can't get nothing right.
But after wrestling (rasslin) with them, hmm it does look better,, at least I think so.

Scott, I did drive it on the street. Went to a few car shows after the June Maxton meet. If you ever heard this lil "E" motor she is bad and loud. The 13 to 1 Compression and my open homemade headers require me to use earplugs when i drive.  I did gas foul the plugs loafing through town.  But to say the least she does draw a crowd at a car show, especially when I fire her up.

Duane, thanks for the pics you brought back from Speed Week,, nice job..
I like the red wheels and Moon's better than my left over blue wheels from the Yellow Roadster... I put taller and skinnier tires on all 4 corners.  I think it looks much better now.

I have a few more tweaks on a few tech Items Kieth pointed out, so I can get the 135 sticker off and get a 175 or at least a 150 tech sticker so I can get my "C" License in September.

Take care,

Hope everyone has a Fun and Safe Labor Day

I like the moons Charles!!!

Scott, that baby is a head turner (from across the maxton pits) when he fires it up! It's one of those cars that you know by sound & just have to smile when you hear it!

Charles,

You have to fiddle with the wire that the button locks on. When you get one disk to fit correctly mark it on the inside with a sharpie, i.e. LF, RR, etc. Doing this will allow the refit to be done rapidly.

Dan,  Just did that.  Each disc has to go back on it's own designated wheel in a particular order.

But the second install (remove and replace) was tricky but much better than the first.

Even in my air conditioned shop it was frustrating, I can only imagine what would have  happend if I tried to do initial install on the track in the heat... oh yeah they would have become frisbee's   LOL

Thanks again.

Hey Deb,

Glad to know I have at least one Fan out there...  (between me and you.. when I fired the Vicky up to get her Tech'd that Friday in June and saw a bunch of heads turn with smiles,,, it made the whole build worth while... the record run coasting thru the traps did not hurt either)...

Thanks for the kind words and support... see you in a few weeks...

I heard a story . It is probably a myth but, The guys that started using discs to keep the salt off the lugs and streamline the wheels ai Bonniville. Found the discs in a dumpster behind RCA records. the discs were old record master disc's that they used to make records. The guy says he screwed a million dollars worth of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry master disc to his hot rod. :-o Any one ever hear that?
Thank you to all the volunteers

Back in the 50s Jim Lindsley had old washing machine covers on the 18"  wheels some where I have a picture. Lot's of wheel covers have been used. Never heard the Elvis story. But John Force saw him at 1000 ft.

Charles,

I agree about the conventional Dzus fasteners with Moon Disks.

I bought the allen head drive fasteners from Roy Fjastad. and think they are great.

The tool is nice, and I bought one, but usually just use a 1/4' drive socket wrench with I think a 3/16 allen drive socket. A little more leverage allows you to ease the fastener to grab the spring and seat it.

Buy some spares. Like any Dzus type design the bottoms can flair out a little, but in a pinch can be squeezed with a pair of plyers.

Tom

P.S. Car looks good. Sits right.

Count me in as a Cajunkid fan as I love your ride too.  Makes me want to take a sawzall to my Miata and turn it into a lakester or roadster!  Maybe I could modify one of those Lotus 7 conversions.  Now how does one narrow that track....

Those superbuttons look real nice too and I imagine they meet the Dzus spec as far as rules go.  Did you get your Dzus fasteners and moon discs from mooneyesus.com and did you use their welding rig?   Looks like you may be on your own as far as jigs go with the superbutton.  I doubt there is much to be gained by moon discs on the miata but I am curious how the installation works and what wheels work best.
