Costs to come watch
« on: August 29, 2008, 03:03:47 AM »
I had to pass on a free trip to the BuB Meet next week.  The timing wasn't right and I'm not that into motorcycles.  I'm going to start real soon in making preparations to come out next year for either the Speedweek or the World of Speed and I have some questions about what it will cost me for a week.  Just some ballpark figures.

What can I expect to pay for a motel room?  I plan on coming out the day before the fun begins and leaving the morning after it all wraps up.  Do the motels have a tendency to jack their rates up when racing is going on?  I would prefer a place with a restaurant.  I've done some checking on the internet but the motel sites a pretty vague when it comes to pricing.  What are the better places to try to stay?  Casino hotels?  Chain motels?  How far in advance should I make reservations?

When will the 2009 event dates be announced?  I'm thinking of going to either Speedweek or the World of Speed, depending on cost.  September gives me another month to save up money but I would rather go in August if I can.

I'm guessing $100 a day for meals and incidentals; T-shirts and whatever else strikes my fancy.

I'll be driving out from the midwest, about 1250 miles one way, so gas and lodging on the way out is something I will be able to figure out when the time comes.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.  Steve

Steve,
The hotels are extremely overcrowded for speedweek. They open reservations in January and the rooms are all gone within hours. Inasmuch as they know why they are being flooded with reservations seven months early for only one week, they raise their rates accordingly. WOS is a lot less crowded and you have an excellent chance of walking up to the front desk and getting a room. Most motels don't have on site restaurants. The casinos all have coffee shops, buffets, and restaurants. The best buffetin Wendover, in my opinion, is at the Rainbow. There are shuttle buses that drive up and down Wendover Blvd and will take you to any of the casinos. Most of the town can be walked though as it is pretty small. You might want to plan about $150 a day for the first few days as there are several vendors and racers that have T-shirts, hats, posters, pictures, etc, etc. If you want event T-shirts, make that a priority when you get there. They sell out quickly. Don't forget to get a shirt from Rick Gold at the ERC racing fuels truck. Red Flame caters the events and has something for eveyone. Monster energy sponsors Speedweek and hands out can of their product. They also had a lounge with couches and shade this year. You might want to consider bringing a bike to ride in the pits. They are L O N G and you will thank yourself 100 times over to have a set of wheels to cruise on. Hope this helps

Thanks.  I had figured on at least $100 a night for a motel and I imagine that estimate will be pretty close.  It's going to be an expensive week but it will be a trip of a lifetime and well worth it.

All of the rooms are high, as they have more demand than availability.  So the price goes up.  Figure higher on the weekends at the casinos, they come down mid-week.  The hotels tend to be more one price the whole week.  Call as soon as they open up reservations.  $100/night is a good ballpark figure.

You can also camp at the Bend in the Road for free, but no services.  You have to be self-contained.

For food, you can bring your own, stock up at the Smith's grocery in town.  Save a few bucks that way.  Bring a large cooler with plenty of beverages, non-alcoholic is better in the heat.  I do not think the casino buffets are that great, just typical mass-produced food.  I will usually have casino buffet dinner maybe once during the week.  The Nugget has a great little taco bar downstairs.  The Salt Flats Cafe is good food at the truckstop at the Speedway exit on the highway.

A portable shade EZ-up and chairs to sit are nice when you are not walking around.  A bicycle is great way to cover ground fast.  Lot of people use a small mini-bike.  Don;t forget sunscreen and chapstick, the dry air causes chapped lips.

At least the past few years, the daily race attendance fee was $10, or buy the weeklong pass for $40.

I plan on it.  I've been to race events around the world; F1 at Spa, Brandshatch and Silverstone. the old Group C/C2 at LeMans, Brandshatch and Silverstone, and to several CART events at Road America.  When I finally get to go to Bonneville I will be complete.

I know.  I had planned to start building a new street rod in the spring but Bonneville has been in the back of my mind since I discovered Sum's web site a few months ago.  I started dreaming about an air-cooled Volkswagen powered lakester.  I don't know about its feasibility but besides going west to see the REAL hotrods run I want to do a little snooping and find out what makes these things go; chassis design and setup, aero and whatever else I can learn.  The friend who was going to fly me out next week is part of max Lambky's crew and I'm waiting for his daily updates when the Bub meeting begins.  That will be a little more fuel to add to my desire-to-go-fast fire.  Yes Fredvance, I'm already in trouble.
