1953 Studebaker Info Needed
« on: August 24, 2008, 11:35:14 PM »
First congrats to all the Record Setters, Workers and Participants at SpeedWeek 2008. Looks like you all pulled off a great event. Hope to be there in 2009.

I have seen a few 53 Studie's and have just found one near me in good condition.

Does anyone make an aftermarket Chassis ?  If not I have heard the chassis on the 53 is kinda weak.  Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as new purpose built chassis or modifications to chassis and front suspension.

I was going to build a 79 to 81 Trans AM,  but the 53 Studebaker is a much cooler car and also fits well into the stable with my other Hot Rods and Race Car. I know the Studie will take more work and is not as areo / slick as the Trans AM, but what the heck, when I get done, it  will give my Vicky a run for it's money for the "cool factor"  plus it would have to be more areo than the 33 Vicky?

Thanks

Charles

Oh if it matters I plan to run it in E/CGALT

Actually, the Stude IS slicker as I understand - the Trans Am just looks slicker.
And as for the frame, the Champions with inline six motors were built with a thinner gauge of steel. This doesn't mean other frames or front clips can't be used. You will probably want to beef up whatever is under the car for your motor.

Art Morrison Ent. in Fife, Wa. builds one.  I used a Chris Alston chassis kit which I modified for my needs.  Caution: don't get hung up on drag racing chassis components unless you know what you are doing............Bob

I went to the Morrison site, put the word "Studebaker" in the search box, and got no matches. It may be in their catalog, which you can download online. The Morrison deal may be based on mild steel rectangular tubing, kicked up at the back and set up for a Pro-Street-style four-link. Their site is at http://www.artmorrison.com/

I've never heard of any other performance chassis parts specifically for Studebakers. My suggestion would be for you to take your rule book with you and talk to some good race car chassis builders in your area. I've put together a page with links to a lot of them, at http://www.roadsters.com/chassis/

Outside of the NASCAR chassis shops, the nearest chassis builder to you I know of is Tootees, in Neeses, South Carolina. He's built some very serious Pro Mods, so he could certainly handle boxing your frame and adding a cage, or building a tube chassis and taking it as far as you want. Tootee's number is (803) 247-2193 and his site is at http://www.tootees.com/

Although he's not a Bonneville racer, Bob Coolidge is a good source for Studebaker information. His site is at http://www.studebakerracing.com/

Bob and Dave,  Thanks alot.. I just got off the phone with the guy who owns the 53 Champion I looked at Sunday.  We agreed on price and I am supposed to go pick it up Friday.

The 53 Champion frame is thinner from what I understand  (about .078 )  the V8 and 1954 on up went to .120 frames ( I think )...

I need to order an SCTA rule book,,,Before I do anything to Chassis.. But know I would like to change as much as I can.. ( I would rather have a rectangle boxed frame made from scratch with all new front and rear supsension and just drop this body on it)..

Cajun, I know this is an older thread, did you find what your looking for?
A word on Art Morrison, you can call them up and get anything made. They have just about every car dimension in autocad and use this along with your input as the base on how to make the frame.(prostreet, protouring, whatever) I know they are building a 53 Stude now for Craigs wife, and the new catalog shows a frame for around $7500. Maybe you can hold off on building the third shop and go that route :-D.
I had AM build a front clip for a 68 International, they also built a couple of teardrop trailer frames for us, (independent trailing arms, dropped floor, air ride) very good people to deal with.
I look forward to seeing your build
