Here is a few, to get the ball rolling, that would help a newcomer listining in.

•(Crunchies):  pressure ridges from the salt drying, they crunch when you walk on them, also rattles your fillings loose if in them when turning off the course.

•(Back door): The 138’ timing trap at the end of the 5th mile, Invalid for records but where you get the big numbers.

•(¼ time):  My personal favorite as it is quite competitive between those that drive our car. It is the first quarter mile speed of the first measured mile, Once again not valid for a record.

•(1st, 2nd, 3rd mile speeds): Actually the average speed of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th mile respectively. But these are the miles that can be used to qualify on a record.

•(Floating Mountain): a small mountain standing by itself in the salt that appears to be floating because of mirage. Used as a landmark by the racers.

That's all I gots time for, for now
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

Once you've heard them enough, you will find out the the speed given for the 1/4 is the one which will tell you if a really big number is coming...Also the only time I put $$ up is on the 1/4 speed..

The numbers on the orange plachards on the course are "markers"

"The bend in the road" -- is the only turn on the access road between where it ends (see next definition) and where it intersects with I-80.

"Land's End"  -- is where the paved access road ends.  There's security there and treacherous driving along the sides of the road, so if you're headed on to the Salt you'll go to Land's End.  There are other names for Land's End, too.

"Red Flame" -- The food vendor is a restaurant that sets up near the pits and serves breakfast and lunch all week long.

"Burford Avenue" -- the road that runs between the courses from the start line to the timing tower.  It's off-limits unless you have requested and been granted permission to use it -- but still, I heard mention of it quite a few times until I figured it out.

"The truckstop" -- A Sinclair fuel stop situated at I-80 Exit 4 (where the road to Land's End crosses).  The truckstop also sports a Mexican restaurant that serves great food from a relatively limited menu -- and the place is a haunt of racers.  Go in there at breakfast time and you'll sooner or later see darned near everyone that's worth seeing.

That's enough for this lesson.

Wall.
Because of aero, point that you are either out of horsepower or traction and you ain't going faster till you get more of what you're short of.
Life is an abrasive. Whether you get ground away or polished to a shine depends on what you are made of.

Once you get used to the classes you will able to talk with knowledge about the speeds dropping the first diget:

A XF/GC runs a 152, you can say 52.

A E/GS runs a 252, you can say 52.

Nish runs a 352, you can say 52.

Study the classes and records, it will come to you.

Like JD says its the 1/4 mile time. Like a pro you can say "Its all about the quarter, the rest is run out".

But makes better sense now that you explained it.

That's gonna be a problem.... I suggest that if you qualify, you immediately dispatch someone to town for a 6 pack... just a suggestion to make your life easier.... OK, just kidding, beer won't get you anything in impound, but it will make it easier to make friends with the mayor.  :-D

"re-inspection" is somewhere you don't want to visit..........

"Jim Jensen or Bill Taylor want to talk to you and your pit crew" is definately something you don't want to hear. Might as well pack up and go home.

The very LAST thing you want to see following a run or at any time -

Lee Kennedy rolling up in his BIG red truck. Be prepared for a sticker of some color to be slapped on your machine and a nice friendly chat, just the two of you.
