Flights to Wendover or SLC?
« on: July 17, 2008, 10:40:55 AM »
This year my youngest daughter is starting Kindergarten and wouldn't ya know it, the school district didn't consult the Bonneville Racing Schedule..  Since little one needs mommy home, that means I'll be racing with grandma and grandpa, but no wifey and kids (big time bummer).

Anybody know the cheapest alternative for flying someone in/near the salt - maybe Friday night or early Saturday morning?  Maybe fly them in on one-way tickets and then they can hitch a ride back with us.

Is Wendover the airport I should be looking at?

I fly into SLC ...

I think a flight into Wendover would get pricey and time comsuming ... unless it is one of the package deals put out by one of the Hotels.

The casinos have a daily flight( SLC to Wendover) I think, there is also the Greyhound. Best to check with the casinos with what they offer.

If they got into SLC by about 3:30 or 4:00 on friday they could take the fun bus for $18.00 each and get $5.00 back a free buffet and a fun pack. not much of a cab ride from the airport to downtown SLC or Bountiful for the pickup location. I'm not sure about the little one though. Here is their website. You can call and ask.

Stay away from Greyhound unless you want to experience a nightmare  :x

Concerning AMTRAC security, a friend of mine flew to Virginia this spring. At the airport check-in, they noticed his drivers license was expired. He did not have time to go back home and get his passport. They let him onboard anyway with no problem. When he attempted to board an AMTRAC train to DC, he was denied access. They (AMTRAC) then gave him a ride to the airport and covered the cost of the difference in the ticket. He flew then with no problem. Go figure.

Amtrak does not stop in Wendover so that is not an option. Besides, the train gets into Salt Lake at an odd hour if I recall correctly. Flying into Salt Lake and either hitching a ride with a racer or taking the fun bus would be the best bet. They might figure something is up though when your babies board the gambling bus. Worth a try either way....

Best way, fly into Salt Lake and rent a car. From the airport you are only 120 miles from the salt flats. if you take your rent a car onto the salt, remember to do a (COMPLETE!) salt removal from every surface of the car, and then wash it again. after it dries, do some donuts in the Wendover dust, and then drive it back to the airport.Trying to do do the Wendover shuttle or Greyhound is disaster waiting to happen... rent the car, and you are there in two hours after your flight arrives.

I must have taken at least 50 pounds of salt from under my rental ( The guy at the car wash in Wendover handed me a snow shovel, and had me get as much of the salt off before I even got to use the hose!) When I took it back to the Enterprise lot at SLC airport they asked me how the race was!!! Seems the big rental outfits are using GPS units to record where, when, and how fast. Not quit Big Brother but getting really close  A good idea if you rent a car is to get some trash bags and duct tape them to the floor boards.. it sort of helps keep the salt out of the carpets.

You will find most won't rent a car going to wendover if you fly in from out of state during speed week. They know what's going on. The car wash at west Wendover uses recycled water. That adds to the problem. I always pray for rain on the way home.

Your car or the rental.........

Duct tape on the brake and throttle pedals. No salt in the cracks of the rubber.  E-brake also.Clutch also if it's a manual tranny.

Just toss the tape when you are done.

If the salt is wet, raise the hood  and wash the engine also when you wash the chassis.

Nobody said clean up was fun.
