Along the lines of Jon's post about buying a piece of property and erecting a building for the racers to store parts, cars, trailers, ballast, etc. Inasmuch as the SCTA has something similar at El Mirage, would it be a possibility for them or the USFRA, (possibly both) to take on the project themselves? It seems to me that it would eventually pay for itself and then be a money maker for the organization(s). Any thoughts?

Let's take a closer look at the building option.  How many folks would leave their stuff there -- and how many would leave stuff only if there was an area where they could do things like a pre-storage washdown?  It might be necessary to add water service to accommodate that need -- but I have a feeling that use of the building would drastically increase if washing were available.

How about room to perform minor work -- would it be more acceptable if there was electricity in the building so that work could be done inside and out of the weather/darkness?  Does the building need a concrete floor to provide easier movement when you're on a creeper -- or should it have gravel, like those I have up here, to allow easy and immediate drainage in case of liquid spills?

Who's going to be the resident out there that will allow racers to call and request access?  That person will need to be rewarded for his efforts, especially since it'd be wise for him to stay on-site while the racer is there working -- to keep our promise that nobody will have access to other folks' stuff while he's in the building working on his.

I'd guess it'll cost on the order of $12/sq.ft. for a building with gravel floor and no utilities -- maybe more.  That puts the price tag for a 40 x 100 structure at $50k, and with the improvements I've mentioned (and the other necessary ones that I've forgot) -- I'd expect to double that.  To amortize $100k in five years (I picked that out of my head, but it sounds reasonable for a simple structure so I'll use it) will take $30k/year.  Divide 30,000 by 400 (the number of available rental running feet) and you get a rate of $75/ft/yr, or $6.25/ft/month.  Put a 20-foot rig in there and you'll pay $125/month to store it.  Then let's be realistic -- there'll only be anything near capacity during a few months of the year, and so revenues generated then will have to be enough to cover a good portion of the fixed costs over the rest of the year (that's assuming that the local folks use the building a little bit but not all that much).

So -- would you pay $200/month to store your stuff for two months?

Jon, I guess it comes down to doing the math.  In my case I travel 750 miles each way.  Lets say I carry 1500 pounds of ballast, and get 7 miles to the gallon with a gross weight of nine tons.  Now if I drop 1500 hundred pounds, slow down to 65, buy a fuel economizer from J.C. Whitney, throw in a coupe of cow magnets, I should get, lets see, divide the weight by the square root of...ah, ah, ah crap, I'll just use the credit card and eat more macaroni and cheese ( not bad with a can of tuna thrown in).

Any more gossip on current numbers?  And when anyone know when the pre-entry list will be posted to the SCTA site?
Thanks!
