Billy,

That is 6-700 miles too far. With reg gas at $4.25 per not in my budget.

North out of Vegas on Hwy 93 just after Alamo, Nv. Take Hwy 318 to Ely, cuts 1 hr off the trip. A better road than 93 also. SB

With gas prices the way they are, this is the winner.
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

They are making the trip of a lifetime (I assume)  coming to the US -  probably for the first time,  and you think they ought to decide on their travel route by minimum miles travelled? to save a few bucks? (relatively speaking)  I guess I'm not focused enough on Land Speed racing -  I thought the object of life was to learn, experience, and enjoy -  boy i guess I need to realign my priorities!

I have been every way you guys have spoke and the route that I like the best was going through Bishop to Tonapa and then through Ely.  I guess I just like the high desert route.  Going through Vegas way just didn't do it for me.  Although if you have never been to Vegas it might be a sight to see.  Going through Sacramento and up into Reno was very scenic, but after that is was just ok.  Lots of animals to look for and look out for once you start getting into some elevation.  Have a fun trip and stay awake. :-D

You need to make the trip to the salt a trip you will always remember.

Take 15 north out of LA to I40.  I40 east to Williams, AZ.  Then 64 north to the Grand Canyon.  Then continue east on 64 east to 89.  North on 89 and south of Page, AZ take Alternate 89 past Marble
Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs to Fredonia, AZ and then north to Kanab, Utah where you will reconnect with 89.

North on 89 at Mount Carmel Junction go east 26 miles on 9 into Zion National Park.  Then back track on 9 back over to 89.  Continue north on 89 to 7 miles south of Panguitch, UT and then east 14 miles on 12 to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Then either back over to 89 or stay on 12 and head north through Escalante and up to Torrey where you will hit 24.  There only 16 miles east is Capitol Reef National Park.  But mainly at Torrey head west on 24 till you get to I70.  Don't get on 70, but head north on 28 for about 7 miles till you get to 50.  Take 50 northwest until you get to I15.  Head north towards Salt Lake City.

If you want to by-pass Salt Lake City on a pretty route (I go this way) head west at Santaquin, UT on 6 over past Eureka where you will get 36 north.  About 44 miles north there is a road that goes west a couple miles over to Rush Valley.  Just as you come into what is Rush Valley (not much) take what looks like a local road north.  It will take you north to Grantsville.  Turn left onto 138 there and it will take you out to I80 and it is west there to Wendover.  A long stretch without gas so make sure you have plenty before leaving Grantsville.  I fill up at Eureka and have plenty to get to Wendover.

If you take this route you will see some of the most spectacular south west scenery you can see.  You have mountains and trees at home.  You need to see "canyon country".  You won't regret it.

c ya,

Sum

That is one heck of a tour.  How long would that take to get from L.A to Wendover?

In Sums directions, when you hit I-50, you're within a few blocks of the "Rodge Mahal". That's my house. Stop by.  :-D  Sum also forgot to mention Disney World in Orlando, Florida but that's all he missed.     Wayno

Sum, you forgot to give him the directions to your place and the date he needs to be there for the pre-Salt BBQ/gathering.

Follow Scott's directions. One addition, the left turn above Alamo is about 4 miles past Ash Springs. Don't miss it or it will cost you 50+ miles and a high climb. Watch all the speed limits. It's 635 from Orange County, Ca to Wendover on this route....Good Luck

That is one heck of a tour.  How long would that take to get from L.A to Wendover?

LA to Grand Canyon = 491 miles  ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Los+Angeles+CA/grand+canyon+AZ/ )

Grand Canyon to Zion National Park = 275 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Grand+Canyon+AZ/Zion+National+Park+UT/ )

Zion to Bryce Canyon National Park = 105 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Zion+National+Park+UT/Rubys+Inn+UT/ )

Bryce to Torrey = 112 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Rubys+Inn+UT/torrey+UT/ )

Torrey to Capitol Reef National Park = 26 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Torrey+UT/Capitol+Reef+National+Park+UT/ )

Capitol Reef to Salina, UT = 97 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Capitol+Reef+National+Park+UT/salina+UT/ )

Salina to Nephi, UT = 55 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/salina+ut/nephi+ut/ )

Nephi to Rush Valley, UT = 81 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/nephi+ut/rush+valley+ut/ )

Rush Valley to Wendover = 111 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/rush+valley+ut/wendover+ut/ )

Total distance is 1354 miles.  3 days is ok, but with everything to see I'd make it 4.  Capitol Reef to Wendover is an easy day.  So this route is twice as far as the shortest one, but I can guarantee you won't be bored or sorry for taking it.  Go home the short way.

Per Stainless's comments to my place leave Capitol Reef and drive east to Blanding (a great drive also passing Lake Powell and Natural Bridges National Monument) = 198 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Capitol+Reef+National+Park+UT/blanding+UT/ ).  Blanding to Wendover = 427 miles ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/blanding+ut/wendover+ut/ ).  On this drive you go right by Canyon Lands National Park and Arches National Park and you are more than welcome to come by my place and join in the festivities and sight seeing here and the trip to the salt with the rest of us.

c ya,

Sum

Did anyone mention we drive on the other side of the street over here. LA traffic and Las Vegas traffic suck and he / they really need to less confused coming from NZ. The best direct route would be best for them.

Carl,

You are correct. The trip of a lifetime should include as much as possible. I guess I have been so many times that the fastest point A to point B trip is my tunnel vision.
