Chute attach pictures from Glen.....
« on: January 22, 2008, 11:19:47 PM »
Glen asked me to post the following pictures and also put them on my site for future reference.  On my site they will always be found on page 7 here:

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/bvilleother/bville%20other%20index.html

So here are the pictures and hopefully Glen will be by to comment on them..............

This attachment procedure was talked about recently under the "Australian Belly Tank Build":

Nice pictures, thanks Glen,

Sorry to say, the first photo is my parachute mount. I visited with Glen in the tech area at WF. I'm just a poor old hillbilly from the ozarks and didn't know any better. Their recommendations made sense. I will make the changes this winter.

GH, glad we met and discussed this mount. As one of the old guys I have seen many things go wrong and try to talk about it to help all of the racers.

To me the attach point on Seth's roadster is a little high. The car has run over 250 successfully.

Stopping wasn't a problem, spinning was until last year. seems they got that fixed.

Those antlers sure did help, but took away a bit of HP. The car has been 260 and no problem stopping.

Slightly high 'chute better than low- some years back a drag chassis builder was sued for anchoring the 'chute UNDER the r end housing, causing the racecar to lift off the ground & crash.

Maybe Mr Stoud or Mr Diest (Jim only, NOT an employee of Jim's company) could elucidate.

All jet dragsters have 'chutes mounted high as far as I know and obviously have some front end lift.

Rex, any comments on attachment point and vehicle's (the mysterious) mass centroid axis?

The Doug Rose jet, when he was drag racing, pulled the front wheels in the lights as the high mounted chute pulled on the car into a wheelie.
That was just SHOWBIZ.
To really pick the proper anchor point for the chute, hang it from a single point with the nose straight down (with the driver aboard), everything else is speculation on what will work for you.
None of the other anchor point shown were as strong as the shackle, it was just backwards.

Ack Attack...................

...........hey you don't have to tell the hillbilly he is backwards, he already almost admitted to that.  I think the ones in pictures 3, 5, and 6 look to be quite strong and go around a pretty big diameter.  Can't really see the attach point on Rick's Streamliner??

Gary,
What was the issue on your attachment?  Was it hardware used or where it was mounted?

As I stated earlier there have been a few shackles break at Bonneville, there were cheap cast iron made in who knows where. Forged steel ones are ok. The tow line loop should have a minimum of 1" to a 1- 1/4" dia. spool.

Cast iron shackles are like imported crank shafts, and rods.
An American made, drop forged shackle that is made with a mimimum ot 1/2 inch material thickness will hold up your racer, everybody, and all the things that came with it.

Jackson, the issue on the chute mount was the small diameter of the shackle. The load is concentrated on a very small area (diameter). I am going to rework it, using an 1-1/4" diameter stainless steel round.
