In some Ignitions systems as the battery voltage goes down the module increases the dwell. Increased Dwell heats up the module and coil. Soon one or both will fail. Cheap Battery chargers and jump starting can be hard on alternator diodes. Its best not to connect disconnect the battery under load or while the engine is running. Surge suppressors on the Alternator will help a lot.
