It's a 76 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, it's a heavy car.

Try to find some of the NASCAR teams they sell their used stuff for a very reasonable price and most of it only will have one race on it. Their trannys can be had at a pretty good discount over a new one and they are state of the art and will take 850 hps on a 3400 lb car.

Just curious, why would someone want a manual transmission in a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow? The turbo 400 can be built to take any abuse a 6000 lb. car can give it. They were standard equipment for crewcabs with 454 chevys that towed some very heavy trailers in stock form.

Russ are you talking about the 4L80 E that is based on the 400??  Here are it's ratios:

4L80E..................2.48.....1.48....1.0.... .75

The 700R4/4L60/4L60E/4L65E is the one with the low first and higher overdrive:

700-R4/4L60.......3.06.....1.63....1.0.... .70

It isn't as strong, but my truck is over 5800 lbs. with the truck and teardrop and I have used a "built" 700R4 behind it with no problems and it has 140,000 miles on it now with 45,000 miles towing.

I agree with Tom though that the 400 could be built plenty strong, but maybe the person just has to have a manual.  If so I would look at one of the 6 speeds from a viper or vette for a road transmission (Borg-Warner T-56 transmission or the Tremec TR-6060 transmission which has succeeded the T-56 for some applications).

NO- talking 4 sp manual heavy cast iron-very tough tranny as trk pullers shell out several rockwell rears & tranny keeps on ticking. Don't know for sure but think they are new process. bought a 80 surburban just to get tranny.bty the turbo 400 are plenty tough- have one behind 392 in tractor w/ 0 problems.
