GM has a real tough 4sp tranny- suburbans w/ towing pkg & pu's- has a low gear for pulling stumps.
Russ are you talking about the 4L80 E that is based on the 400?? Here are it's ratios:
4L80E..................2.48.....1.48....1.0.... .75
The 700R4/4L60/4L60E/4L65E is the one with the low first and higher overdrive:
700-R4/4L60.......3.06.....1.63....1.0.... .70
It isn't as strong, but my truck is over 5800 lbs. with the truck and teardrop and I have used a "built" 700R4 behind it with no problems and it has 140,000 miles on it now with 45,000 miles towing.
I agree with Tom though that the 400 could be built plenty strong, but maybe the person just has to have a manual. If so I would look at one of the 6 speeds from a viper or vette for a road transmission (Borg-Warner T-56 transmission or the Tremec TR-6060 transmission which has succeeded the T-56 for some applications).
