Self esteem includes the remembrance of the pressure Ford exhibited when they sought to have a NASCAR spoiler allowed on their "TOO SLOW" T-Bird and SCTA folded..
And the GM act when their precious and very expensive private time FIA record was taken away by a "Individual Hot Rodder" with a 15 year old car at Speedweek.
To watch them scurry around with money to get someone to stay the following week in hopes they could try again was a fall down laffer.
They even hired an attorney with Bonneville experience and 2 Club status to attempt to file a protest that went down in flames.
The BUB event exists solely for the benefit of the promoter and nothing more.
The names, dates, and other details are unknown to some, denied by others, but remain as just part of the history that seems to be forgotten and forcasts the future.

Lighten up and put all the emotion aside.  "Amateur" is just a word but it does have several meanings and one of them is negative.  There must be a lot of words that will work and not have ANY negativity and be acceptable to everyone.

I am 100% fine with the term Amateur. If it's good enough for the Olympics then it's good enough for me. Professional sports is people who make a living at it and the only people making a living off of land speed racing are the parts suppliers and casino/hotels.

I consider myself a "professional" engineer and an "amateur" racer. That's cuz money comes to me from my engineering work and flows out from me for my racing!  :-P

At speed week I will try to remember who is and who isn't and announce their times as such. Can we add it to the  number of the vehicle. like 1212G/GS pro, or Amateur or EGO trip. That should clear up any questions to the spectators who don't really give a damn as long as you go fast, of course bikes will need a 2nd number plate.

Glen,
Does that mean we will have to start calling it a Pro-Am Event?

It will be called speed week forever. To call it anything else sucks. The big guys come and go and the hotrodder is forever at heart and don't care about status. We are all on our own EGO trips and it's because we have salt fever.

You are correct John and as stated earlier in this thread talking about the other big associations once you try and get the big money and corporations in and running things out go the little guy.  People from the outside that come and view our sport know that the dedication and work put in by the racers show's by the results and respect.

SO Glen is it Proam AMpro or car ## so in so just qualified for a record!!!!!!!  Take it to impound!!!!!

The "Hot Rod" that beat the GM big buck project is now classified as a "Classic" and is still faster.
Honda with the S-2000,  the magazine, and the power experts failed to beat an unlikely combination they thought would be a soft spot to start.
I kinda like that and the effort surly earned it.
Experience is the best teacher and we can only hope they at least got some of that to take home on their tail between their legs..

I can see (hear) it now, when Glen is announcing about the Jesel Valvetrains pickup:

The Mopar ProAm Ram running a hot cam ran a blah-blah mph -- Ram it into impound.

The original amateur racing!

I like it. That is what we do. We are all amateur racers, some just have more money than other to throw at it. In the end you just walk away with a record and trophy if you are lucky. Let us keep it that way.

Tom G.

I agree with Tom and the SCTA.  If the SCTA wants to define their sport as amateur, them let 'em!  If NHRA, NASCAR, SCCA, etc., want to define the lower levels of their sport as Sportsman (although they get paid), let 'em!  If you are trying to present your high-esteemed self as a Professional in our "amateur" organization and receive a Professional's recognition - GOOD LUCK!  We're not all here for the glory...there are other venues for that.

Well I started this thread for giving the SCTA props on the website, and its now 3+ pages of the word "Amateur"...

Personally I don't care what they call it, Amateur, Pro, Sportsman... Whatever... I rarely call it amatuer when I talk with people, I more describe it as one of the only places to go as fast as you can, build whatever you want and race it... Can't do it in nascar...

As long as I earn the respect of my peers that race at bonneville.  I don't dont care what they call it.... Respect, Recognition and going fast are my goals...

Some have other agenda's and goals, not everybody races on the same page or budget...
