SCTA get new look
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:00:14 AM »
SCTA-BNI today uploaded a new website... Looks great... As having changed website design many times in past and as early as this year in January, I know it's a large task at hand.. It takes time, lots of time to get it done. I know landracing.com is only about 50% complete since updating. So Great job SCTA for putting up a new updated website, and I hope everything goes smooth in the transition.

looks like someone did alot of hard work.....unfortunately someone there feels that were a bunch of "amateurs" I for one don't feel i am and alot of the other racers don't seem like it to me. the big unfortunate thing is that i have been working my ass off for quite a few years in trying to get some big money sponsors. one big pitch is next week and if i sent them to the SCTA website and they get the impression that the SCTA thinks their a bunch of "amateurs" my deal will be shot to hell....damn it... does anyone have the webmasters EMAIL..........

Kent,

I think the best place to start would be:

president@scta-bni.org

He is in your club.

Hey, Kent, I see what you mean.  I had taken a quick look at the site and had seen the "amateur" -- but didn't make the connection.  I understand the concept Ed (or whomever did the new stuff) is trying to put across -- but maybe there's a way to say that we're not in it for the money -- without implying to a potential sponsor (or anyone, for that matter) that we're less qualified - less concerned about professional results - less anything -- than folks who race for a living.

Got an idea of how to re-word that caption?  I'm not sure I do right now -- but I'll think about it and get back to you when something great comes along.

I notice when I click on "Bonneville" or "ElMirage" it opens a new window, and if I click on one of the links in that window, there is no way to go back since the new window is a pop-up and doesn't have a back button.  If I want to browse the site I end up with a bunch of pop-up windows that I have to close to get back to the start.  A simple navigation with the menu on the left would have been easier to view.  If I click "Bonneville" then in that window click "weather", to go to spectator info (or any other link on the Bonneville page) I have to go back to the main page, click on "Bonneville" then select the next link.  Not super user friendly.
Other than that, the site looks nice.

The BUB pays $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ prices I would think it is a Pro-event

Why don't you let them finish the design before picking  it apart, he's a volunteer as well and it takes his free time to put it together. :-D

I agree with Kent. The word "amateur" should disappear entirely.
Why? It's not #1:
1.   a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons. Compare professional.
It's not #2.
2.   an athlete who has never competed for payment or for a monetary prize.
It's #3:
3.   a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity.

That's the connotation we are trying to get away from. You can be a professional in a sport that does not pay money, and there isn't a word to convey that without someone uttering "amateur".
The same way that your custom, 10,000 hour build, $50,000 wonder is called "home built".

I agree about the multiple window opening. It needs to open in a regular page so that the back button works. The pages look good but need a lot of work.

Is Ed Safarik still doing the web pages? Ed has been doing the web pages and the SCTA newsletter and has done a really great job.

Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.

I tried to find the record at El Mirage for D/GT on the new site. What am I doing wrong?

Doug
I think that should read El Mirage Results, not records. The rule book shows the record @ 179.964 mph. I don't think there are plans to include all the lakes records in the web page, only the ones that are broken at the meets.

Doug is right. There are no records for El Mirage. The record link takes you to results. I'm sure it will get fixed.

I'm not a racer, nor a member - but I must say I liked the other one better. Maybe it will improve, and I'm willing to wait.

One caveat - "Goodwind" Festival, instead of "Goodwood"?
