What have you done to make it faster this year?
« on: July 12, 2007, 11:30:24 AM »
I have been going to the salt from 02 and I noticed that no one I have talked to brings the same car 2 years in a row. People I have met say "were going to be faster then last year because we added......."

It is usually followed by something like "we added a new turbo with more psi".....or...."new nose on the car"....or "lighter wheels on the bike"...ect.

I am curious to see what everyone has done differently this year to make the car faster (and safer) then last year. I am already thinking of things to do differently next year and just purchased a larger bore TB set that I can swap on the salt because I "KNOW" they will make me go faster (note that I am not installing them BEFORE I make a few runs!!!!)

So what did you do to make it faster......and how much faster do you think it will go?

Well now, lets see!!!! I bought the lakester from Mike Cook and Billy Hodges as a roller, no engine or transmission, no canopy and no paint, but everything else was there. I helped put together a 481 inch BBC with a Rons Terminator fuel injection system to run methanol which I've never run before. Helped put together a Turbo 400 tranny for it, built the dry sump oil system, that was fun making all those lines with fittings, plumbed the systems and managed to get it fired. Got a good friend up this way with a body shop and got all panels painted my favorite color. With the Dzus fasteners I only scratched that new paint job a few times. Thank goodness for touch up. Hopefully, if we get the tune right I will get my AA license with this ride and go up from there. My old ride, the Beretta, did a best of 228 out the back door. So this is what I have done over the last year and one half in my spare time between Homicides, family time and trying to find help to go faster.

Kent,

Dave is our resident LSR "Detective", no really he is...

This sign sits accordingly in his trailer...

I guess for those of you who don't know me I should clarify the Homicides deal. I am a Detective with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office up in Olympia, Washington. I investigate major crimes, mostly Homicide, Attempted Homicides and serious assaults. Doesn't leave me much time for family or hobbies when things get busy up here. Sometimes it puts a major rush on me getting things ready for the salt which I won't miss no matter what comes up unless it is something major with my family who always come first.

JHNuts, we removed the blown up motor and put in another one, smaller displacement and then added some stuff...   May install a new throttle actuator as well, don't know yet  :|

Homicides and Beat Downs are best left to the professionals.
Bonneville on the other hand will only survive with the amateurs.

Got rid of the electric water pump, installed belt driven water pump. Plumbed water lines from rear of intake to thermostat housing neck. Hope this solves problem of dumping water from engine and making a second pass with no coolent in engine. Other than that everything else is the same as last Speed Week. Hope to have a succesful Speed week.

Probably none of this will make it faster, (haven't made a full pass under power in 3 years for various reasons) but hopefully straighter and more reliable. In no particular order
1.) new rotors and calipers
2.) new wheel bearings f and r (water damaged)
3.) new windshield
4.) new pilots and chutes redone by Deist
5.) new steering wheel
6.) new EFI and data recorder (salt worms)
7.) rebuilt air-shifter brain box
8.) rebuilt rack and pinion box
9.) new input shaft on quick-change
10.) rebuilt fuel pump
11.) rebalanced wheels
12.) hydroed all on-board bottles
13.) readjusted suspension and ride height
14.) new and bigger name decals
15.) labeled all drawers in tool equipment trailer
16.) lubed wheel bearings trailers
17.) undercoated trailers
18.) repainted trailers

Probably more but that's all I can think of for now. Sorry you asked?

Richard,

I heard that the owners of Danny Boy fired each other, or got into a apple fight then fired each other.. Anyways can I bring a fire suit while they figure it out... I think you need someone to shake the car down before you guys make any real passes...

Fresh motor, smaller cubes.  New intercooler and blower.  New manifold, and overdrive.  The old overdrive is the major reason why we could never make many runs, it would simply fail on us every year.  So despite all of the other great improvements the overdrive dependability might be the most critical.  See build pictures.

We're cheatin' every way we can!

We got a new trailer (with twin air)
New paint
Heavier driver (with lighter co-driver)
Dropped the number of decals
Don't talk to JackD so much
Alcohol injected drivers (after 6:00 pm)
New junk yard to supply motor(s)
Different girlfriend
Color matched tape on all the body seams
Different movies to watch on the computer while waiting in line
Different program in the car'puter (read 'a tad more HP')
And a high zoot suspension deflectionator what tells me if I'm about throw a half gainer as I go out the big end.
Oh yeah, and unlike like years past, we plan to be ready to rock by Tuesday at the latest (none o' this last day Friday morning crap like years past you hear?)

BTW do you know where I can get a 60% load (to run in my diesel pickup so I can make it to the salt in one day for a change)?  Figure I'll save on en-route hotel bills that way.

Fast regards,

Jim
