spools verses posi track units
« on: June 26, 2007, 08:09:38 PM »
I'm getting ready to build a car and after reading several posts about cars spinning at high speed with spools was thinking about running a posi unit instead
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
thanks

What type of car? What is the wheelbase? What is the tread width? All LSR cars are not the same, and require different systems to work correctly. What works for a 108"wb GT car is not really the best for a 216"wb liner.

we are building a plymouth laser for a/gcc not sure on the wheelbase yet
its going to be longer than stock for stability
what i was trying to say in my original post is the car is getting out of
control due to the tires spinning and wouldn't it be safter to run a posi
unit instead of a spool
thanks

All types have been used. There is no clear cut winner or loser here. Sorry, that is not much help I know.

A lot of the spins are because the driver starts to chase the vehicle instead of letting it drift a little and not over correcting, it's not easy but there are no walls to hit and easing it back on course in the room we have can save it in a lot of cases. Every car is different and takes the driver some time to get used to how it handles at speed.

Robbie, If you install a 2 to 1 roundy round car type steering quickener backwards it will slow the steering but let you turn as much as before. Just takes twice as many turns on the wheel to get there.

The power and torque output can make a big difference. We have a club member running a AA/STR that was having a hell of a time going straight. They were using a posi. They found the culprit was a set of mismatched tires. The rolling diameters were slightly different causing the car to want to go left.

It's the little things you don't check that cause some interesting problems.

On our checklist, before every run, we check rollout and adjust tire pressure. Don't know if it helps, but it sure hasn't hurt so far. Mickey T's were notorious for not being matched sets. When buying tires, always insist on matched sets.

When you are done and the car spins and you have a spool/posi/equal-lock/Detroit locker take it out. If you have an open rear and you spin put one in.....Good Luck
