Ballast/extra weight question
« on: June 18, 2007, 11:50:14 PM »
I'm looking to add some extra weight to my 1930 sedan ,I've heard that some racers fill the frame rails with lead shot. The two main frame rails on  my car are 4X2 box section and there are about 100 inches of fillable rail on each side.
How many lbs of lead shot will I have to buy to fill em up.
I guess the smaller sized shot will be heavier per cubic inch!

About 50-60 lbs/ft depending on shot size, but ya might want to section the areas unless you just want the entire car a lot heavier.

Shot size doesn't matter, you will have 40% voids. Frame rails = 1600 cu-in /1728= 0.926 cu-ft x 700#/cu-ft x 60% (for the voids) = 388 # more or less. Good luck, just don't let the plug out while you are running, that would be a lot of shot on the course. I guess if that happened, those pundits that say the course is like driving on marbles would be right.

Don't add all that weight on the rear of the car. Try and get about 51% on the front end and 49% on the rear.

Take this with a grain of salt as I have no clue what I am saying most of the time....but I would want you to consider the chance of the lead shot moving forward or backward causing transferring of momentum during hard acceleration or breaking if a section was not completely filled. This might cause a load shift that could affect breaking or balance of the car.
Once again I dont know if this could be a problem.

That goes along with having baffles in large water tanks.

Expanding foam will fill the empty spaces and keep the shot load in place.
On the FWD cars, I built a tank in the space from the back of the tire to the front door post like a fender well liner and filled it with a pipe plug access under the hood.
The drain was the same on the bottom.
On the RWD door slammers, I filled the rocker panels with lead shot and nobody else knew how we ran so fast with no visible ballast.
All Ya haddado was ask, but nobody did.
