Motec help--Jon/Joe
« on: May 02, 2007, 03:44:27 PM »
Jon and Joe, I am contemplating going to a Motec with the new bike as it will be a total aftermarket FI set-up. I need pointers on setting up crank sensor(it has none) and MAP sensor etc.
And what sort of set-up are you using for wheelspin? Thanks.
Bonneville 2001,2002,2003,2004,and NO stinking 2005,DLRA 2006, next?
Well, sure can't complain about 2008--6 records over 200 and 5 hats from Bonneville,Bubs, and El Mirage for the team!

Dave Dahlgrun ?? probably spelled that wrong has been helping Jon get his set up, Ack too if I remember correctly.  If you remember Bub, Jon was fighting with communication problems and I think he has figured a lot of that out.  The salt can be hard on electronics.  But to answer the question, several of Jon's homemade sensors are spaced magnets, alternating polarity, counting switches for RPM.  We use the same type on our car motor and wheels for data. Both Amo bikes were carbed in their previous life, converted to FI to make life in the long run a bit easier.

got all our speed secrets from Dahlgren.........:):)

it was real hush...hush....I drilled holes in some metal
that rotated....and epoxied magnets in there.......and
epoxied a hall effect sensor into the cam and crank covers
and aimed it near the plate that rotated with the magnets.........
(ps I went the extra yard and used two magnets instead of one)

get this I mounted the MAP sensor in a spot that measured manifold
pressure......its high end stuff.......GM part number......

(apparently my bike has some aero secrets that work....thats cool
let me know what they are.....maybe the stock front fender?)

wheel spin.....well I am so lame that the two wheel speed sensors I have
arent mounted.........to lazy........

Joe (angry at myself for not knowing what I am doing, and not passing it
on to others)

bak.....thanks for the tip......I have had many tell me it would be
better to have it come together......and it might.....my thought
on making it was that I couldnt possibly keep much air attached
well enough with that length of surface  to try to bring it together
to a point.........

Jim.....seriously.....the Motec is a fine piece......BUT only as
good as the whole system......NAMELY the integration..ie wiring..shielding
etc.............that is one of Dave Dahlgren's forte's.......understanding the
system......what is takes to get it there....and the knowledge base to
tweak it...........Dave's Harness's are second to NONE.....and makes
my junk 10 times better that it would otherwise be.......

I always figured I couldnt afford a turbo and efi set up, truth is
I COULDNT AFFORD...NOT TO.........I SAVED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS
BY FINALLY DOING SOMETHING RIGHT.......THE FIRST TIME and going with
Dave D. and his expertise.........the money I saved was one thing......the
heart ache and dissapointment and TIME I saved by trusting Dave D. was priceless............

I havent messed with the wheel speed thing........I have one guage...
a shift light.........nothing else, no tach, no speedo, no temp guages etc.....

Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Dave is a super asset when coming to knowledge of FI setups and harness design, plus much much more.

Cam and Crank sensors we basically built. Remember we also came from motors that were vintage motors by todays standards early 1990's stuff.

I personally went with Haltech on my bike instead of motec. Seemed it had most features of Motec and was alittle less.

Just having the system is such a small part of whole process. A very good understanding of the system is by part the most important. This is not a piggy back system...

Call Dave, he has excellent prices, his quality of work is best I have ever seen, and is willing to help. He may not be cheap, but he gets the job done.... Priceless...

Dave also did the Motec and Harness on Ack Attack, Larry Forstall's bikes, John Wennerberg's bike, Joe Amo's bike and my Haltech and harness on my bike, as well as other salt flats cars.

Last year at SpeedWeek there was a section of the pits cordoned off and labelled "Dave Dahlgren's babies".  Nancy put up that sign.  Those of us that have Dave's work on our race vehicles try to pit in the same area so that he can move from one of us to the next without having to chase all over the pits.  He'll come over and look at the data after a run and help the crew decide if any changes are worth trying.  He sometimes goes with the vehicle to the start line to help there.  I've got photos to prove it!

Last year Nancy's EX250 Ninja was pitted right next to the Ack Attack -- talk about both ends of the scale -- and Dave would wander back and forth from them to us to help with the tune-up or whatever.  I don't think either one of us got more attention than the other, even though Mike's bike was a little faster (by a factor of three or so) and more complex...

Dave's price for equipment usually includes his commitment to assist at SpeedWeek.  I like to think of having him on my team as having good ol' Al Einstein come over to help with my physics homework.

Dave, I've saved that can of beer that you didn't drink last year.  I'll be sure to have it with us this year at SpeedWeek - in exchange for this glowing endorsement.
