Diesel Streamliner... fuel question
« on: April 25, 2007, 02:27:14 PM »
In the description of diesel streamliner class, it states that ANY FUEL MAY BE USED.

However, in the section of the rule book that talks about fuels, it states that event sponsor's fuel must be used for all record runs. Is that an exception in diesel streamliner?
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Only gas class records need to be event fuel sealed by the sponsor. Nitro & alky (not sure about diesel)are available by the sponsor but do not have to be purchased at the salt or tank sealed.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

In the diesel truck class rules it states "this class must use event diesel fuel", which suggests it's available.

So do any of the diesel streamliners run nitromethane?

The immaturity of the rule reflects the frequency of the use and level of caring.
Anybody knows that the output of  compression ignition engines can vary quite a bit with various fluids.

Actually I just had a closer look at the rule book.

2.B
Fuels

"If the contest board establishes an 'EVENT' gas or diesel fuel, that product shall be used for record attempts at the event."

But then in the description of the car classes:

5.A.1:

"Turbochargers, superchargers and any choice of fuels are allowed in Diesel Streamliner class."

Looks to me like biodiesel would be OK in diesel streamliner, but the other diesel classes (diesel truck, for example) have to run "event" diesel if one is established.

Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Don't know specifically about what the rule book allows you to do, but I'm told that since ERC doesn't manufacture diesel they just hit the Pilot station in Wendover, fill up a drum or two and re-sell/seal it out of the trailer.

I'm going to hazard a guess that nobody is prepared to test diesel for anything. Where there is an event diesel supplied it takes that problem away.

For streamliner you don't have a problem, you can run anything. The class was designed to be wide open.

For truck classes, unlimited diesel truck is also wide open on fuel (5.F.1). For the other diesel classes at El Mirage for example, there is no event diesel that I know of, so it's, ahem, wide open.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Thanks! That was my interpretation as well, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't understanding it the way I WANTED to

Whatever they put in those diesels, it's a crime they run so good on stuff that smells so bad!  All that black smoke doesn't look that good either.

As I recall, Carl Heap didn't always run straight diesel.
