Motorcycle Front Fenders
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:26:57 AM »
It would appear that a front fender built to take maximum drag-lowering advantage of the rules, i. e. enclosing the entire top half of the wheel, would act as a rudder, generating yaw, pitch and roll moments when steered, much as the illegal non-cross ventilated wheel. I see fenders like this on quite a few A and APS bikes. Has anyone compared the handling of their bikes with and without such a fender?

Yes, I did......I ran a 180 degree fender in our 125c.c. Rotax powered Can-am. in 2003 at BNI.
Tom Evans asked me to report back to him on the handling..........mind you this was on a small lightweight bike....not one of the Busa type bikes,
it did not work....the handling felt like the front wheel and/or forks were loose.........so we started cutting the fender till it felt safe.

You might take a lesson from the Road Racers or the TF Drag bikes.
The evolution of the allowed fender shape for Bonneville shows more unreasoned theory than proven results.
It is tough to convince some people. :-(

Well Scott, we are going to have to engrave that in the racers hall of fame.
Reinventing the wheel is a part of all motor sports because racers are inherently secretive. Danged if I want to give anyone else an advantage. Reading the posts here is a treasure trove of the thick book!

And a few for the thin.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.

We two real world results on covering half the wheel.

Charlie Toy, when you developed the Toy Body came out with a fender that cover the entire top half of the wheel. Later during speedweek he was taking a hack saw to it.

Second. How about Aaron Wilson and the RR1000 body. Covers half the wheel, and has gone super fast. I think they hit about 215 at WOS. On a nitro harley motor. I have personally ran this bike at BUB's a few years ago and went in the mid 190's. WOW, it handled great. I was more then surprised on how straight and easy it was.

Think about the fact that the body that covered the front wheel created it's own problems, but at least it didn't have to steer.
Getting lucky with no cross wind is betting on the the future of the sport.

Valentino Rossi is a good example of a MotoGP front fender. I'm sure the Doctor's bike has been through the wind tunnel. 213 mph. Notice the clearance between the tire and fender. After you notice the lean angle. When was the last time you had your knuckles 6 inches from the ground. And not crash. Scares me just to look.

I also took Jack's advice and looked at the top fuel drag bikes. They don't run a fender or much else aero.

Pro stock bikes do, and if you can wrinkle a tire like this, what the hell do you need aero for?

perhaps in drag racing, the front fender has more value as real estate for sponsor stickers etc.

Think about the fender to body/fairing interface.  8-) Sorta like drafting and ducks in a row kinda thing. :-o

Rossi's problem wasn't his heart. His problem was 202.3 mph top speed. Stoner's Ducati ran 209.5 mph.
