Best tires for motorcycles?
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:29:03 PM »
I am currently build a LS bike and was curious what you guys recommend for tires for the bike? This being my rookie year I am only going to run gas classes so I should only be running in between 160-180 mph tops. My goal is to do 200 mph someday, so what tires do you recommend for 200 mph.

thanks,
Scott

Any ZR rated tire should be fine. I know that many bikes have been in the 220-235 speed range at Maxton with the Bridgestones that come stock on a Hayabusa.

I have heard of people shaving or cutting down their tires. Is this just to cut down on tire growth and rotating mass?

Yes Scott, that is why people shave.  Generally shaving removes about 1/2 to 2/3 of the tread.  It then has less of a tendency to separate and cause problems.  I'm sure there is a lot more science to it out there, but that is the easy answer.

The slower the vehicle, the greater fraction of total drag is rolling resistance. Has anyone run A/B tests to see if shaving makes the bike faster?

Kent,

That's awesome, thank you very much! I look forward to speaking with you Saturday at Randy's place. Also, if there is anything I can do to help you please let me know.
