Tire shaving
« on: February 22, 2007, 12:44:41 AM »
Anyone know where I can get motorcycle tires shaved ? What is the optimum depth of tread and pressure suggested for shaved tires? Target speed is 225
Thanks
Nathan

Do you want the name of the guy that shaved mine?
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

2006 SCTA rulebook, page 214:  Nate Jones Tire Company, 1837 Reservoir Drive, Signal Hill, CA 90755.  562 597 3369.

He'll ask you where you'll be racing and how fast you plan to go.  With that information he'll know how much to shave and how to contour the tread surface.  If you'd like he can supply you with recommendations on which tire to use, and he can supply the tires, too.

His shop will shave, mount, balance, and even nitrogen fill the tires if you wish.  He'll respond to your questions about tread depth and pressure.

He'll ship the tires to you -- or will have some racer deliver them to you on the Salt if time is of the essence.  He'll likely visit you on the Salt and ask how the tires are working for you.

When you are in inspection and the inspector asks about your tires -- if you state "I got my tire from Nate Jones" you'll almost immediately get a "pass" -- that's the respect his shop has earned.

I've learned each of these tidbits from experience with him.  And, as is implied above -- he supports our sport with product and by advertising in the rulebook.  Consider giving him a call.

You could use the Joe Amo method....access road, spin tire till tread is suitably reduced.  If Jon gets the archives up, there was a picture.
Probably should use SSS advice, but you can't argue with success....

Not everybody has enough suitable brothers.
I have 2 and 1 would say"Are you kidding, bite me."
The other would say "You mean you will let me.'
"I would rather lose going fast enough to win than win going slow enough to lose."
"That horrible smell is dirty feet being held to the fire"

Please educate me. We all saw the tire shaving in the "fastest Indian". Is the real purpose to make the tire more safe with reduced centrifical force or can one actually pick up speed with a shaved tire? And why?

And at what point will one fail tech inspection--

thanks--
