Is there a class for AIR-COOLED sports cars?
« on: February 05, 2007, 09:25:16 PM »
Hi I am James, new here from Australia. I can't seem to see a class for air-cooled cars. I own a 1972 Honda Coupe and was curious, is there a class for air-cooled cars ie Porsche, Honda and Volkswagen? Thanks guys.
Air cooled, dry sump, quad carburettor, 133HP at 9000rpm. Honda Coupe 9s.

Hi James,
Air cooled cars run in the same class as water cooled cars. No distinction between the two. What ever the engine displacement is determines the engine class you will run. For example my partner runs a cosworth vega in G/PRO which means the motor is a G motor (1.51-2.0L) which runs in the (PRO) Production class. Hope this helps.

Evil Tweety had a 700cc engine in 2006 according to the SpeedWeek program.

Aha!  I was wondering when I posted that American Z800.

I had one of those coupes way back when, when I lived in Japan.  Actually started with the 4-door sedan model (with 4-carbs), but finally found a 4-carb coupe I could afford.

Both had absolutely EVIL torque steer when accelerating hard in first gear.  But then, it was Honda's first front wheel drive.  They've fixed that I hear.

Yep - air cooled runs with the water cooled cars.  Evil Tweety is a '71 Z600 Coupe - air cooled 600cc blown out to 700cc.  Am running J/Production in Bonneville and El Mirage.  Might investigate other classes later.

If you decide you want to race your Coupe (and it's a Zot), get in touch with me - I can give you a few pointers that I figured out.  J/Pro is 101.715 at Lake Gairdner, around 85 in El Mirage and 99.299 in Bonneville.   Would love  to ship the car to Australia, but don't have the time/money.  (Heck, even if it isn't a Z, get in touch - the small Hondas are lots of fun!)

D'oh - sorry James, didn't read too close!  Your car would run under the 1 liter class (I) if you kept it as is.  You could up the displacement 1000cc, or sleeve it down to 750cc and go J.

I/Pro should already be in the 120's (don't have my rule book here) - but a reasonable goal.  (Keep in mind that the elevation in Bonneville robs a lot of power.)

When I said I for displacement, I assumed that the "9s" meant 900cc - what is the displacement of your car?
