18 inch steel wheels?
« on: January 18, 2005, 11:39:00 AM »
I'm looking to use the dunlop vintage racing tires and would like some suggestions on a wheel builder/supplier or is there an oem wheel out there I could use?

Several custom wheel builders in the back of the SCTA rule book.

What speeds are the Dunlop Vintage or the Coker "Firestones" acceptable to at Bonneville?

Shaved Dunlops have been used succesfully up to 230. The Coker Firestone 'display' tires are not legal for use.

On my roadster, and a traditional 18 inch wheel, I use the 1948 Ford Milk Truck wheel. The center has been cut out and replaced with a steel plate drilled for my Olds half shafts. It seems like 18 inch OEM wheels should be making a comeback now. RF

Wheel Vintiques can supply 18" x 7" forged aluminum wheels which are excellant. Many centers styles are available; they make them to your spec on offsets.. I used their solid style for the 7.00 x 18 Dunlops. I used a steel 18 x 5-1/2" for the 5.50 Dunlops. Implement outers are available from farm and obsolete dealers such as Miller tire & wheel. You need to have someone put in a center.
I believe there are some narrow 18" rims available which are used as "space saver" spares in high dollar cars. Good luck

Stockton wheel makes wheels for us.Very strong. We have run the Dunlops @ 237 with no problems.Just be sure that you shave them down allmost all the way and take the corners off.We have chunked them before but, I dont think we shaved them enough and our driver was doing one of his Chi-Town hustler imitations.

More Nitro Beck, you shouldn't be so hard on Dave as he is really trying to have some patience. You all's Roadster does work the tires extra hard. Good luck.

I wasnt trying to be hard on him.I think that he is one of the best roadster drivers out there. The pass I am refering to was the first run at El mirage with the new Chet Hemi,on 98%.The power took him by surprise. It was the first time that I ever saw two long black lines from the starting line to as far as you can see.Wait till you see what Dave will be driving this year.
