Chassis Certification Questions
« on: November 13, 2023, 07:13:20 AM »
Hello All.  What do you all do for frame/cage certifications?  Is it something SCTA needs to do, can you have a more local drag race cert done?  Is it needed or at what level?  Thank you in advance.

GET  SCTA Rule Book and build to the class you want to run in and take it to a meet and get it "inspected" as you go through tech.

Thank you.  I have a rule book, I was just wondering/hoping I could have it looked at before going too much further.  Now is almost too late to make too many major changes.  I bought a prebent full cage and welded it in to a full homemade tube frame.

Call, send pictures, sketches, etc.
People here are [VERY] helpful but they have the final say!
They may know a tech near you!

Thanks Woody.  I sent an email to Lee Kennedy and John Carroll based on the SCTA website.  Both got bounced back as undeliverable.

I did find a semi local NHRA chassis cert guy and reached out to him.  I see Texas Mile says NHRA cert 8.5 to do what I was hoping for.

If nothing else, try asking JoAnn Carlson, the SCTA office manager: ( office@scta-bni.org ) to help you find the officials you need to meet.

PLEASE consult with them before you proceed too much, k?

Thank you, that is precisely what I am attempting to do....stop and see if it is possible, what to change, what to add, if on track or just Hell no.  As for different sanctioning bodies, the call out for a NHRA 8.5 cert was directly from Texas Mile rule book.  I figured if I could get with someone from there, maybe easier in my location, maybe not, but it would tell me something...anything.

Well, the last I heard was that Curt Halvorson, the guy that drove Lynn Goodfellow's Mormon Missile D/FS ten years ago, is still a diesel mechanic and racer in Manitowoc (I think).

There was a guy on here who ran a hot rod shop and built cars someplace up by Hayward or Rice Lake.  I believe he said he was cutting back to retirement or part time or something - maybe on of the others here can offer more.

Anybody else got names for this guy?

Although I know nothing about NHRA tech etc, I have heard that drag race cage specs often are not legal due to bar wall thickness and diameter specs. This is where a careful read of the rule book will help. If the diameter/thickness of your cage is OK and various gussets/welds etc are reasonable I suspect you will be OK but you do need to check.

Thank you for the reply.  I actually spoke with Steve Davies today.  He answered a bunch of questions and I feel much better about the process and requirements.

I know there can be issues across different race sanctioning bodies, but I thought originally it would be an option to get the ball rolling, knowing SCTA would have the final say.

Looks like you're on the right track. SCTA regulations are different than NHRA, ECTA, Texas Mile, etc.  The SCTA regulations are, to me, stricter than the other organizations.

And one deviation can possibly keep you from running.

Thank you.  Yes, now talking with Steve, I feel reassured and encouraged.  Time to order another 40ft of tubing
