It was me .

John,

Thank you for supporting Danny, and helping him complete his dream and journey. Much appreciated and very thoughtful.

Danny sure handled the "Notch" a hell of a lot better than I have.

(My excuse?  Just saying I'm inspecting the course from a wide number of differing degrees.)

Are we competitors or teammates? I think the latter. When I saw Danny get that beautiful streamliner going - it was wonderful. Mickey gave me a ride in his Mustang in 1968(?) showing me how to drive the International Course. What a guy. Danny is a real Thompson, too. It had to happen!

Every time some expert says the pucker factor cannot be increased one of this bunch proves them wrong!
Mine went up some just listening to Danny go by at the big end!

I was near the line as he got on it.  That sound and the first green flag I saw and heard at Indy (I was near the line there, too.  It was 1961) are never to be forgotten.

I was at the 5 mile mark in 2018 when he upped the AA/FS record. Let me tell you that 459 mph exit speed was a spiritual moment. The sight, sound and smell will forever linger in my mind!

On Danny's record run he was off the throttle for 5 seconds when he got crossed up . He felt the speed would have been 470 but for that . No traction control . Just good driving . I was in the back seat of the push truck . His mother reached back and squeezed my hand when the speed came over the radio . She was in a wheel chair because of a stroke the week before . She wasn't going to let that keep her away .
